Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will be looking to get back in the title mix when he returns to the Octagon against Rob Font in Las Vegas on May 23.
Rob Font v Cody Garbrandt UFC Fight Night Predictions & Tips
A lot of people believe that Cody Garbrandt has had his day, and he will never become UFC champion again. I am not one of those people, I believe Garbrandt has the hunger back and he will soon move up the rankings and get another shot at the belt.
‘No Love’ won his first six UFC bouts quite convincingly which culminated in him beating Dominick Cruz on points to claim the UFC bantamweight championship belt at UFC 207.
Whether or not Garbrandt thought he had made it with the belt around his waist, he didn’t hold that belt for long and went on to lose his next three bouts. He dropped the belt to T.J Dillashaw at UFC 217, before losing to Dillashaw again at UFC 227. He then suffered his third successive defeat when he was knocked out by Pedro Munhoz in the opening round at UFC 235.
To be honest, it looked like Garbrandt’s career was over. To lose three successive fights when you still believe you should be a world champion is hard to take. He took some time to get back to basics and reassess his career, and he came back all guns blazing knocked out Raphael Assuncao in two rounds last June.
Garbrandt knows that to be even considered for another title shot, he needs to impress against Font and get his hand raised at the end.
Font is no mug, he is currently ranked at number three, but I am not convinced he has ever faced anyone like Garbrandt.
The 33-year-old has 18 wins and four defeats on his professional record, with three of those losses coming in UFC. He has fought some good opponents, but no real household names.
Looking at the current form, Font has won his last three bouts against Sergio Pettis, Ricky Simon and Marlon Moraes. It’s important to point out that Font’s last UFC defeat was back in July 2018 when he lost on points to Assuncao – the last man Garbrandt knocked out.
Font is capable of adding a scalp like Garbrandt to his list of accomplishments. But I honestly cannot see it happening. I think Garbrandt will be too smart for Font, and he will do enough to win this on points and move a step closer to another title shot.
