Donna Vekic vs Dayana Yastremska Match Preview
An intriguing match-up awaits in the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International on Thursday as Donna Vekic – once touted as the next big thing in women’s tennis – takes on 19-year-old phenom Dayana Yastremska.
Vekic reached her first WTA final in Tashkent as a 16-year-old in 2012 and won her first title as a 17-year-old in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, becoming the youngest WTA champion in eight years at the time.
However, Vekic struggled with her swift rise and dropped out of the top 100 as quickly as she entered it, spending much of 2015 and 2016 languishing on the ITF circuit. But after learning how to cope with life on tour, Vekic enjoyed a resurgence in 2017, cracking the top 50 for the first time and she hasn’t looked back since.
Still just 23 years of age, Vekic reached a career-high ranking of No. 19 last year, finishing runner-up at St. Petersburg and Nottingham, while she also reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the U.S. Open and made the fourth round of Roland Garros, closing out 2019 by qualifying for the WTA Elite Trophy.
Vekic came into Adelaide on a five-match losing streak, including a three-set loss to Yulia Putintseva in the first round of Brisbane last week, but she’s registered a pair of solid three-set victories this week, taking out Anastasija Sevastova in the opening round and good friend Maria Sakkari in the second round, coming back from a set down to prevail 2-6 7-5 6-1. Can she make her first semi-final of the season on Thursday?
Yastremska burst onto the scene in 2018 as she became the first player born in the 2000s to break into the top 100, and she’s since enjoyed a rapid rise to be on the cusp of the top 20.
The Ukrainian would go on to capture her maiden WTA title in Hong Kong towards the end of 2018 and despite some injury troubles at the start of 2019, took her game to the next level, posting six top 20 wins and winning two more titles in Hua Hin and Strasbourg. Yastremska played her first full season of Grand Slam tennis, reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon and the third rounds of the Australian and U.S. Opens, while she lost in the first round of Roland Garros.
Yastremska registered the best win of her career as she defeated No. 2 Karolina Pliskova in Wuhan, and like Vekic, also qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy, finishing the year at a career-high No. 22. The 19-year-old lost her first match of the season in three sets to Kiki Bertens in Brisbane, but she hasn’t lost a set yet in Adelaide, toppling Timea Babos 7-5 6-3 before benefitting from an Angelique Kerber retirement in the second round on Wednesday, with the German pulling the pin while trailing 3-6 0-2 due to a back injury.
Donna Vekic vs Dayana Yastremska Prediction
It will be the second tour-level meeting between the pair after Yastremska won their opening clash at the back-end of last season in straight sets, running away with the match in the second. Vekic has the better serve of the pair at this stage, but Yastremska for me is the more superior player from the baseline, so if she can take care of her own delivery, I think the Ukrainian has the advantage in this match-up.
