Serena Williams vs Tamara Zidansek Match Preview
It took less than an hour for Serena to secure her place in the second round on Monday as the seven-time Australian Open champion dished out a superb performance to race past rising 18-year-old Anastasia Potapova.
Serena was dialled in from the get-go, needing just 19 minutes to drop a bagel on the Russian in the first set, and although the second set was much more competitive, the legendary American was never in any real danger, despite trailing by a break early. Serena managed to claim the break back immediately and was all over Potapova’s serve, winning over 75 per cent of points against it.
For the first time at a Grand Slam this decade…. *clears throat*

Ending the match with 24 winners and nine aces, Serena says it was the perfect springboard match to launch herself into the tournament.
“I felt like I started out really well,” Williams said in her post-match press conference. “I played really strong in the first set, and just [built] on that.
“I feel like I can still improve and get better throughout this tournament, for sure. This is a good stepping stone for right now.”
Serena remains undefeated for 2020 after capturing the Auckland title last week, which was her first singles trophy since becoming a mother.
The 38-year-old admitted it was nice to snap her title drought, which dated back to the 2017 Australian Open, which she won while three months pregnant with daughter Olympia.
“I think, so to say, monkey off my back, kind of,” Williams said about her Auckland title. “It was very important for me to get a win in the final. It felt like a relief. Yeah, like I could move forward now.”
After losing four Grand Slam finals over the last two years since returning to the tour, is this the tournament where Serena finally captures that elusive 24th major crown?
She faces Zidansek for the first time on Wednesday. The Slovenian advanced into the second round of the Australian Open for the second straight year after posting a 6-3 6-3 win over Na-Lae Han in the first round on Monday. It’s been a busy star to the year for Zidansek – this is her third tournament after losing in the second round of Auckland and the opening round of Hobart, falling to the eventual champion Elena Rybakina last week.
Zidansek first entered the main tour in 2018, breaking the top 100 for the first time after a title-winning run in Bol, while she made her Grand Slam main draw debut that year at the U.S. Open. Zidansek won her first Grand Slam match at the Australian open last year, beating Daria Gavrilova before going down to eventual champion Naomi Osaka, while she also successfully defended her WTA 125K Series crown in Bol. Overall, the 22-year-old registered a 15-18 record on the WTA Tour, also finishing runner-up on the clay of Nurnberg to end the season at No. 64 in the world.
Serena Williams vs Tamara Zidansek Prediction
This is easily the biggest match of Zidansek’s career, but she’s never beaten a top 10 player and it will be a seismic shock if she does so at the Australian Open. Serena looked outstanding against Potapova and has taken a lot of confidence from her triumph in Auckland. The American is a woman on a mission in Melbourne this fortnight and I don’t think there’s anything Zidansek will be able to do to even take a set on Wednesday.
