ATP Tour Tennis
The ATP Tour is the highest level of competition in men’s tennis consisting of over 60 tournaments every year. The 2020 season is shaping up to be another exciting season in the ATP Tour. Once again Nadal, Djokovic and Federer enter the year as the men to beat as the top three players in the rankings, but there were signs in 2019 that the joint monopoly of the ATP Tour’s ‘big 3’ is in danger.
ATP Tour 2019 Review
The ATP 2019 Tour was a breakout year for many emerging stars in tennis as Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem all left their mark on the major tournaments of the year. The highlight of the year for many was the ATP Tour Final between Thiem and Tsitsipas – eventually won by the Greek in a dramatic 3-set clash that went all the way to the wire with a final set tie-breaker. This match gave tennis fans a taste for life after the monopoly of the evergreen ‘big 3’ Nadal, Djokovic and Federer who once again occupied the top 3 spots in the rankings. Nadal is the oldest ever year-ending world number 1 in ATP tennis history.
Djokovic and Nadal shared the slams at two a-piece to take their tallies up to 16 and 19 respectively, with Federer’s record of men’s slams (20) under serious threat going into this season as you’d expect Nadal to be a heavy favourite leading up to 2020’s Roland Garros.
