Hearts v Celtic (13:30 BST)

October is almost over and Hearts are still, rather surprisingly, setting the pace in the Scottish Premiership. But just how much longer can they keep their good form going and can they transfer it over the League Cup in order to upset holders Celtic and book a place in the final?

The Jambos certainly have previous when it comes to upsetting the Hoops. Last season they ended Brendan Rodgers’ side’s lengthy domestic unbeaten run with a sensational 4-0 rout, and they have already got the better of them in the 2018/19 campaign too thanks to a Kyle Lafferty strike in early August. Craig Levein’s men have won seven of the nine fixtures they have played since then, losing only once, so they go into this tie in fantastic form and with every belief that they can advance.

However, there is one result and performance that has me doubting them here. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Hearts travelled to Ibrox and were sent home with their tails between their legs after being outplayed and outclassed by the Gers, and Celtic are more than capable of matching and bettering what their rivals did to the Jambos on that day.

The Hoops have produced more negative results than most would have expected during the first few months of the season, but they have rattled in 10 goals in their last two games and have now won four of the last five competitive fixtures. They may not be at their absolute best right now, but they appear to have overcome the mini-crisis that threatened to engulf them earlier this season and I expect them to move within one win of silverware on Sunday.

I also expect to see a few goals – they always appear to be on the cards when these two teams face each other and neither side has had any problems finding the back of the net this season. Eight of the last nine fixtures between Celtic & Hearts have produced at least three goals and we could see more of the same here as the Hoops seal a place in the final and stay in the hunt for a third straight treble-winning season.

Aberdeen v Rangers (16:30 BST)

Rangers are just one win away from their first appearance in a major cup final under Steven Gerrard, but standing in their way are an Aberdeen side that have repeatedly made finals in recent years and ruined the Liverpool legend’s debut in Scottish football back in August. So can Gerrard get revenge here?

That opening-day draw up at Pittodrie was tough to swallow for Rangers. Despite losing Alfredo Morelos to an early red card, which was later overturned, the Gers dominated most of the match only to be punished for not adding to James Tavernier’s penalty when Bruce Anderson popped up to snatch an equaliser for the Dons deep into added-time. And that has been something of a recurring theme for Rangers when they have left Ibrox this season – they have not been killing teams off and they have allowed them to get back into to the game and snatch points.

They will be hoping that they cured their travel sickness with the 4-1 win at Hamilton Academical last weekend, but three of those goals came late on to add plenty of gloss to what had otherwise been an underwhelming performance. They will need to be much better here, but Aberdeen have hardly set Scottish football alight this season and this could well be the year when they lose the status of Scotland’s ‘number two team. They have really struggled for consistency this season and that is why they are stuck in the bottom half of the table, five points behind their semi-final opponents.

So while Rangers have had their struggles away from Ibrox, you have to have some confidence in them here. They have stood up and produced some big results in big games this season, with the exception of the Old Firm derby, and despite finishing behind the Dons in the last two seasons they have dominated this fixture since 2016. Rangers have won six and drawn two of the last nine meetings, with the sole defeat coming back in September 2016, and that is hard to ignore. Aberdeen could grab a goal though – they have scored in six of the last nine encounters and this Rangers defence has looked vulnerable recently with only two clean sheets coming in their last 11 games.

SCOTTISH CUP BETTING TIPS: HOW TO BET ON OUTRIGHT MARKETS

Outright betting on the Scottish Cup & Scottish Cup remains a great way to make a profit while betting on Scottish football, but of course you have to have some patience because these types of bets are not ones that pay out quickly, unless you have placed them during the final days of the season.

Scottish Cup & League Cup outright markets are straightforward - you are betting on potential winners, finalists etc, and these Scottish Cup prediction markets and Scottish League Cup prediction markets are available all season long so you can wait to see how a team performs before backing them in one of these markets. So what markets are available? Read on...

Scottish Cup Winner & Scottish League Cup Winner

The name of this market says it all – you are simply betting on who will lift the famous trophy at the end of the Scottish Cup Final/Scottish League Cup Final. The usual suspects – Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen – are at the head of the betting and while a couple of those clubs will be available at backable odds prior to the start of the competition, Celtic’s recent dominance of the domestic scene means there is not much appeal in this market.

Name The Finalists

Perhaps you cannot decide between two teams – so why not back them both to reach the final instead? The ‘Name The Finalists’ betting market is simple, you bet on which two teams will go head-to-head for the Scottish Cup or League Cup Trophy. This market offers an opportunity to make a nice profit because there is added risk – you will need two teams to reach the final, and not one, for this bet to be a winner. Celtic may have dominated the scene in recent years, but even the shortest priced final could be available at backable odds because the other half of the final line-up is well and truly up for grabs. But of course, once the action begins, those odds could shorten quickly.

To Reach Final

This Scottish Cup/League Cup betting market is very similar to the ‘Name The Finalists’ one, but in this instance you only need to select one team to make the final. Fancy Aberdeen to go all the way to the final but not completely convinced they will lift the trophy? If so then this is market for you. However, the odds in this market are a good deal shorter than those available in the ‘Name The Finalists’ because there is less risk. They are backable though, but just like the two markets I mentioned before, they will get shorter as the competition unfolds.

SCOTTISH CUP & LEAGUE CUP BETTING TIPS: HOW TO BET ON MATCHES

Betting on Scottish Cup & League Cup matches has never been easier and there has never been so many markets to choose from for every single game – but which markets should you be using in an attempt to make a profit?

Bettingpro.com offers Scottish Cup & League Cup betting tips for matches in both of these competitions and the following markets feature regularly in our previews…

Winner

Football betting markets do not come much more simpler than this one – you are simply backing a team to win the game or for the match to end in a draw. This market is available for every football match you can possibly bet on, but it goes without saying that sometimes it will not offer the most appealing odds. The best chance of making a decent profit in this market comes from what the bookmakers perceive to be a very competitive. If a match looks to be one sided then there will be one clear favourite and that team’s odds will not be appealing.

Handicap

The handicap market is very similar to the ‘Winner’ market, but in this instance you are backing a team to overcome a fictional handicap. For example, Celtic are 4/7 to beat Hibernian and that price may offer very little in the way of appeal. However, you can still back the Hoops to win, at a better price, thanks to the handicap market. In this instance, Celtic -2 to win the match is available at 4/1. So what does the -2 mean? It means Hibernian will start the game with a fictional 2-0 lead and Celtic must win by three goals in order to erase the deficit and win the match, landing you a winning bet. On the opposite side, you may believe Celtic will win by a single goal so you could go Hibernian +2, which is available at 1/2. That means if Celtic win the match 1-0 on the field, Hibernian will actually be 2-1 winners in terms of your bet once the two-goal handicap is applied.

Half-Time/Full-Time

Another way to back a team to win at a better price than the one available in the ‘Winner’ market is to dive into the Half-time/Full-time market. This market requires you to bet on who you think will be winning at half-time and full-time in the match. So for example, you may believe Kilmarnock and Aberdeen will be drawing at half-time but fancy Aberdeen to be in front at full-time. Therefore the selection you would make would be Draw/Aberdeen, which is currently available at 5/1 This market can offer a great way to make a healthy profit because you need two things to happen for it to be a winner.

Winning Margin

Winning margin is another way to back a team at a better price than the one available in the ‘Winner’ betting market – and just like the previous markets I have mentioned this is straightforward. You are merely betting on how many goals a team will win by – Celtic to win by 1 goal, Celtic to win by 2 goals, Celtic to win by 3 goals more etc. So instead of backing Celtic to beat Hibernian at 4/7, you may fancy them to run out comfortable winners by two goals. Backing Celtic to win by 2 goals in this instance would offer a higher, and more appealing, price of 15/4.

Total Goals

The outcome of the match does not matter as far as this betting market is confirmed – you are merely betting on how many goals will be scored in total. So for example, if you are expecting to see at least two goals you could back Over 1.5 Total Goals, or you may expect to see three or less so you would select Under 3.5 Total Goals. The prices in this market will obviously vary from match to match, so while it may offer a tempting price in one game it may not be particularly appealing in another.

Both Teams To Score

Just like ‘Total Goals’, this football betting market is not affected by the outcome of a match. When betting on this market you simply need both teams involved in the game to find the back of the net – it does not matter how many times they both score, each team just needs to score at least once. Of course, just like ‘Total Goals’ the appeal of this market will vary from match to match. For example, the odds on both teams scoring will be bigger if one team has a rock-solid defence that rarely concedes, while the price will be short if the match is features to two teams with leaky rearguards.

Match Result & Both Teams To Score

This market combines two of the previous markets I have mentioned – Winner and Both Teams To Score. It is straightforward though and it does offer another opportunity to back a match outcome at a bigger price than the one available in the ‘Winner’ market. In this instance, all you are doing is betting on the outcome of the match and whether or not both teams will score. So for example, you may expect odds-on favourites Rangers to beat Hearts but want a bigger price than 4/9. By going into this market you can get a price as big as 5/2 on Rangers to win & both teams to score. For this bet to win you just need Hearts to score in a losing effort. Of course, the odds are affected by the likelihood of both teams scoring.

Match Result & Over/Under Total Goals

This is very similar to the last market I wrote about, but instead of backing both teams to score you are simply betting on who will win and how many goals will be scored in the match. For example, when Rangers host Hearts you may be expecting the Gers to win a match that sees at least three goals. Therefore you would back Rangers/Over 2.5 in this market at odds of 27/20. It does not matter if Rangers win 3-0, 2-1 of 10-0 – as long as they are victorious and three total goals are scored then your bet would be a winner. Of course, the odds are affected by the likelihood of goals being scored in the match.

First Goalscorer

First Goalscorer betting remains one of the most popular forms of betting when it comes to football matches. This market is available for every match in top club and international competitions, and it offers a great opportunity to make a healthy profit because you are simple betting on who will break the deadlock with the game’s first goal. With 20 outfield players on the pitch when the match gets underway, there are plenty of players to choose from and that means even regular goalscorers will be available at backable prices. But perhaps you like the look of a goal-scoring midfielder – his odds could be rather sizeable and if he does break the deadlock you will enjoy a very tidy return.

Anytime Goalscorer

Odds in this market are shorter than the First Goalscorer market because you are merely betting on a player to score in the match. It does not matter if he nets first, second, third or last – as long as he finds the back of the net your bet will be a winner. Big name players are usually at short odds in this market, so you often have to be a little creative when picking out a goalscorer. Perhaps one team is excellent at set-pieces, bringing a defender into play in this market at a big price? Or perhaps a side has a midfielder with a knack for ghosting into the box and grabbing a goal here and there? This market can offer good rewards when you successfully back a player that is not exactly prolific in front of goal.
