BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR BETTING TIPS GUIDE: HOW TO BET ON BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

BBC Sports Personality of the Year continues to be one of the most important events on the UK sporting calendar each and every year, and the bookmakers continue to give customers the opportunity to bet on several different markets for the ceremony.

Winner

This market is fairly obvious – you are betting on who the winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be. This market is live all year round and that means there are plenty of opportunities to back a winner. Of course, odds will fluctuate as Britain’s sporting stars enjoy success, and this is a market that can produce very healthy returns because the bookmakers’ favourite does not always win. In 2017 boxing star Anthony Joshua was the clear odds-on favourite to win the award, but he did not even place in the top three as 25/1 outsider Mo Farah took the gong. That is how unpredictable this award can be, but if you can successfully back an outsider the returns could be big.

Top 3

The Top 3 market has you betting on who you believe will finish in the Top 3 when the winners are announced. This market does not tend to be available all year round, but just like the Winner market it does provide punters with the opportunity to score sizeable returns because the BBC Sports Personality of the Year has thrown up quite a few surprises over the years. In 2017 Jonathan Rea and Jonnie Peacock finished second and third respectively despite being 16/1 and 12/1 outsiders in the Top 3 market, so this goes to show that the bookies do not always get it right. If you can successfully pick out an outsider for a Top 3 Finish, your bet could turn out to be very profitable.

Sports Personality of the Year History

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony has become a staple of the UK sporting calendar since it was first introduced back in 1954.

Athlete Christopher Chataway won the award that night and since then a whole host of sportsmen and women from a variety of sports have received the honour to celebrate their sporting achievements over the course of that year.

Murray Makes History

No person has won this award more times than tennis star Andy Murray, who ended Great Britain's long-running Grand Slam drought with two Wimbledon titles and a US Open crown to land this award a record-setting three times.

An Olympic Gold medal and a US Open success was not enough for the Dunblane ace to win the gong in 2012, but when he ended GB's Wimbledon wait the following year there was only ever going to be one winner, and he took the award again in 2015 after he almost single-handedly led Team GB to a first Davis Cup title for 79 years.

Murray then completed a hat-trick of Sports Personality titles when he won Wimbledon for the second time in 2016, and it is going to take at least three years for anybody to take away his SPOTY record because no other active sportsman or woman has won this award more than once.

Bookies Stunned By Shock 2017 Result

Anthony Joshua being beaten to 2017 BBC Sports Personality of the Year by Mo Farah is one of the biggest shocks in the history of the annual award, according to bookmaker William Hill.

World heavyweight boxing champion Joshua had been the bookmakers' overwhelming odds-on favourite to win the award for several months after his huge victory over the legendary Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium, but he did not even place in the top three that year.

25/1 third favourite Mo Farah walked away with the award after he was honoured for winning a third consecutive 10,000m gold medal at the World Championships, while also claiming the silver medal in the 5,000m at the prestigious athletics meeting.

Motorcyclist Jonathan Rea (16/1 to finish in the top three) finished in second place, while athlete Jonnie Peacock (12/1 to finish in the top three) placed third.

“The last time a shock like this happened at Sports Personality of the Year was when 20/1 shot Ryan Giggs beat 1/10 favourite Jenson Button to the award,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.

“This is as much of a shock as that and 77% of all bets placed on this market were for Joshua. Wow!!!”
