Big Bash League Betting Tips

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades (Wednesday, 08:15 GMT)

The Sydney Sixers have enjoyed been enjoying their Big Bash campaign, and they are very much in the running to take one of the semi-final places in the close season, although there is still a lot of time left for them to rise higher or come crashing down. Four wins and four losses means that they are one of the four sides sitting between second and fifth that have played eight, won four and lost four, with the middle-section of the Big Bash incredibly tight this year, while there are three teams with six points, displaying that nothing can be taken for granted this year. The Sixers come into this one on the back of a very disappointing loss to the Perth Scorchers as they allowed the bottom side in the league the chance to beat them, which they took with aplomb. Worryingly for the Sixers, their bowling attack looked rather toothless as the Scorchers got home with seven wickets and seven balls to spare. The Melbourne Renegades arrive on the back of a heavy defeat to the Brisbane Heat, although they will point to their recent wins, which saw them hammer the Heat in the reverse, while they were the side that inflicted a first loss of the campaign on current leaders the Hobart Hurricanes as they easily chased down their target of 145. This one sees the two teams very evenly-matched, and this is displayed through the odds too. However, we feel that the Renegades have more about them than their opponents, while the Sixers looked incredibly weak in their loss to the Scorchers, with the Sydney based side beaten far too easily by a side that had been sitting at the bottom of the league.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Thunder (Thursday, 08:15 GMT)

The Brisbane Heat are one of the sides that are behind the majority of the league as they have only played seven games, rather than the eight that six of the other eight sides have played. Their three wins and four defeats means they are in sixth in the league with six points, level with bottom side the Melbourne Stars. A victory in their next match would see them enter into a clustered mid table section, which currently sees four teams sitting on eight points. The Heat’s last match saw them hammer the Melbourne Renegades in an impressive 101 run win as they scored 192/4 before skittling the Renegades for just 91, avenging their loss to the same opponents in the reverse of the fixtures in the match before. The Sydney Thunder on the other hand come into this one sitting in third in the table with eight points from four wins, and they are very much in the mix for a semi-final berth. Their last game saw the side hammer the Adelaide Strikers by 71 runs as Shane Watson’s 68 set the outfit on their way to a big win.

Interestingly, the reverse of the fixture between the two saw the Thunder lose by 15 runs in a rain affected game, with the side not given the overs to chase down the Heat’s 186/8 in the end. Despite sitting in second in the table, the Thunder are the outsiders for this one, with the Heat odds-on. We are therefore recommending backing the Thunder at 11/10 as their huge win over the Adelaide Strikers in the last round and their overall form means they offer good value to win.

Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes (Friday, 10:30 GMT)

It has been a tough season for the Perth Scorchers, with the side limping off the bottom of the table on net run rate after a torrid start. Just three wins in eight is poor but, despite the fact the top side in the league has six wins, the Scorchers know that a few victories will get them back into contention for a top four spot. The Hobart Hurricanes arrive as top dogs in the league and, after seven games, they have a four points lead over the Sydney Thunder in second, and they can extend this to six points if they win their game in hand. Right now, it looks like the Hurricanes will be incredibly tough to stop, with the side losing just once all tournament.

If the Scorchers are to get anything out of this game then they have to be a the very top of their game. Cameron Bancroft was on top form in the last match after he notched 87 not out, and the opener will be vital in halting the Hurricanes attack, although it will not be all up to him, as Andrew Tye will likely carry a lot of the weight of expectation with the ball. For the Hurricanes, it is a case of continuing their fantastic run. D’Arcy Short was denied a T20 century by an umpiring blunder and was stranded on 96 not out in the end, while George Bailey didn’t even manage to get in to play his hand in the end as the Hurricanes top order fired. The Hurricanes offer no real value in the match winner market as they have only lost once this year, so we are instead turning our attention to the top Hurricanes batsman, and we think that being denied a century will only fire Short up, and we are backing him at 2/1 with Unibet to top score for the league leaders.

Is there an incentive to sign up at the website - ie. free bets, risk-free bets etc? Are their odds competitive? Do they offer much variety in the way of markets? Can I bet In-Play? What special promotions can I use to insure my bet or boost my pay-out if it is a winner? What standard of customer service can I expect?

All of those questions, and more, are answered in our reviews that you can access HERE.

What is the T20 Big Bash League?

The T20 Big Bash League is a cricketing tournament which sees teams play one another in the shortest format of the game. T20's, or Twenty20 cricket sees teams given 20 overs to bat, and 20 overs to bowl, with the fact there are only 120 balls to bat and bowl seeing players come into bat looking to hit huge shots early on, meaning thunderous 6's and cartwheeling stumps are the norm.
While the Big Bash may not boast as much oversees talent as the Indian Premier League does, it still draws big crowds and the best Australian players, with the likes of Shane Watson, Chris Lynn and Cameron Bancroft all involved in the tournament. In the 2017/18 edition of the tournament, it was the Adelaide Strikers that romped to victory as they smashed an impressive 202/2 in the final, helping them to beat the Hobart Hurricanes by 25 runs after they could only notch 177/5 in their 20 overs.

Can I bet on Big Bash cricket?

Yes, of course you can. The Big Bash league is a massive event in the cricketing calendar, with Australia's premier T20 competition providing no shortage of betting options. Because T20 cricket is so much shorter than ODI and Test cricket, it can be far more attractive for bettors that do not really follow cricket, while placing a bet can take the most exciting format of the game and add to it.

Big Bash match betting tips

While cricket betting may not be quite as big as football betting, there is no shortage in the available markets, with a glut of available ways to back your favourite teams and players, with the best batsman, best bowler, most 6's and outright match winner just a few of the markets available. Here, we will run down the available markets so you can bet on the Big Bash with confidence.

Big Bash match winner

This is the most straightforward market to bet on in cricket. Here, you simply back a certain team to be the winner of the match. For example, you can back the Hobart Hurricanes to defeat the Adelaide Strikers, but this may not always offer great value. If the Strikers languish at the bottom of the table and the Hurricanes are at the top and unbeaten, you will likely only see good value on a Strikers win due to their contrasting form. Instead, you are better of backing a side which sees two evenly-matched teams going head-to-head, as they will be more difficult to separate, or if you feel that an upset is on the cards, then you can back the underdogs at good odds, although this does come with high risk to your bet.

Top Team Batsman and Top Team Bowler

The Top Batsman and Top Bowler markets are two separate markets, and they offer you the chance to back the player on a certain team that you think will shine with the bat or ball. For example, if you think that Brendon McCullum will top score for the Brisbane Heat, then you can back him to do so at fairly good odds because you are backing him to outscore every other player on the Heat. Likewise, if you think that Mohammad Nabi will take the most wickets for the Melbourne Renegades, then you can back him to do so, but he must take more wickets than any other Renegades' bowler in that match to see your bet come in.

Highest Opening Partnership

In this market, you can back the team that you think will provide the highest partnership in the match. If you think that D'Arcy Short and Matthew Wade's opening partnership for the Hobart Hurricanes will be too strong for Evan Gulbis and Ben Dunk of the Melbourne Stars, then you can back them to do outscore the pair on the day.

Top Batsman

Much like the Top Team Batsman market, here, you back the player you think will top score. However, your bet will see greater value as your choice is not only trying to outscore his teammates, but the opposition too. This means that your choice has to outscore 21 other players, meaning there is far more risk to this bet. However, if your pick does top score in the game, you will likely be rewarded with a greater return for your risk.

Highest First 6 Overs

In cricket, an over is bowled by a single bowler and is made up of six balls. Once that bowler has bowled his six balls, a different bowler must then bowl the next over before that original bowler can bowl again. Therefore, six overs is made up of 36 balls and constitutes over a quarter of the entirety of one team's innings. The first six overs can quite often make or break a team, with a solid start building the foundation for a huge score, while if quick wickets fall then it can see a team give themselves a huge mountain to limb, making the firs six overs vital. This market lets you bet on which team will score the most runs in the first six then, so it is not just a case of backing the openers that you think will do the damage, but also the middle-order batsmen too, as they may be called to the crease sooner than they would like.

First Ball

This market lets you bet on the outcome of the very first ball of the match. This means you can bet on it being a dot ball, or going for one, two, three, four, five or six, a wicket, a no ball, a wide, a bye, or a leg bye, with a three or a six usually providing the longest odds as they are the least likely outcomes so early in the innings.

Man of the Match

Like the Top Batsman market, this market pits your choice against every other player on the pitch, from both Team A and Team B. The Man of the Match award can be given for a batting performance, a bowling performance, an amalgamation of the two, or there ability in the field along with the aforementioned, meaning you are betting on the best all-round player, or the man that wins the match for his side.

First Wicket Method

Here, you can back how the first wicket of the game will fall. The options for how the first wicket will go down include bowled, caught, LBW, run out, caught and bowled, stumped and other. This market is best utilised when you have a good knowledge of the openers and bowlers. If you do know the batsmen well, then you may be aware that he is poor with his running between the wickets or likes to get big air on his shots, making a run out or catch more likely, while you may be aware that a certain bowler has a wicked slower ball that can deceive the batsman, resulting in the wickets being decimated.

Do bookmakers offer money back specials on Big Bash bets?

The bookmakers will often create specials when it comes to the biggest cricketing events. You might get the chance to enjoy double odds on any returns if your Top Batsman scores a century.

There are also money-back specials such as a refund on In-Play bets if your batsman is out LBW, while there are free bets available with the bookmakers when you open an account, with operators adding in a deposit bonus or a free matched bet when you sign up.

Can I bet In-Play on the Big Bash?

Cricket betting has become even bigger since the introduction of In-Play betting. In-Play betting allows you to survey the conditions and the teams before making your bet. This means that you do not have to assume that a certain team's star man will be in their ranks and then see your bet suffer due to a last minute injury or change in the lineup.

Betting In-Play can also allow you to snatch up better odds on your favourite team if they are struggling in the match. For example, if the Hobart Hurricanes are struggling at 10/3, but D'Arcy Short is still in and looked in good touch throughout the tournament, you may be tempted to bet on the Hurricanes still winning as they will provide better odds due to the tough situation they find themselves in, giving you a bigger return if they are to pull of the improbable.
