Rugby Championship Predictions & Tips: Argentina v New Zealand (Saturday 08:45 GMT)
Can the spirit of Diego Maradona inspire Argentina to their second successive victory over the almighty All Blacks on Saturday?
Argentina football legend Diego Maradona passed away at the age of 60 on Wednesday and Pumas coach Mario Ledesma has already paid tribute to the famous number 10 and said they will attempt to honour his name by showing the same amount of passion that he did when playing.
Maradon might be seen as a football legend, but he loved all sports and was a huge supporter of his country’s rugby team. He was even seen cheering the Pumas on during their 2015 World Cup campaign in England.
The Pumas have shocked everyone this season as they are the only side yet to taste defeat. They have played two matches so far, their first one saw them record their first ever victory over New Zealand when they ran out 25-15 winners at the Parramatta Stadium.
They then took on Australia in Newcastle a week later and ended up drawing 15-15 with the Wallabies, that draw put them on six points – the same as Australia and New Zealand – with two games left to play.
The All Blacks have amazingly lost two of their three matches, while the Wallabies have won one, drawn one and lost. Victory for the Pumas on Saturday will see them only needing a draw against Australia on December 5 to be crowned champions.
Before the start of this tournament, thinking Argentina could beat New Zealand only once never mind twice would have seen you receive some funny looks. But this is 2020 and any thing can happen it seems.
With what has happened to Argentina in the last few days with the death of Maradona, I am backing number 10 Nicolas Sanchez to be the hero for the Pumas. He scored all 40 points Argentina have scored in their two matches – 25 against New Zealand and 15 against Australia.
I am confident that if he plays well and brings his kicking boots, then Argentina could upset the All Blacks once again.
