Katie Walsh’s video guide to the Cheltenham Festival

Leigh Copson:

Former Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey and Betway ambassador, Katie Walsh, has taken Nick Luck behind the scenes at National Hunt racing’s most famous venue ahead of the 2020 Festival.

Football has the World Cup. Athletics has the Olympics. For National Hunt racing, the most prestigious event is undoubtedly the Cheltenham Festival.

For four fantastic days, the biggest and brightest talents from around the racing world gather in Gloucestershire, and battle it out for some of the most prestigious prizes the sport has to offer. 200,000 racing fans will flood through Prestbury Park during the course of the week, and over £4.5million in prize money will be handed out across 28 fantastic races.

The ITV Racing team and Racing TV will be on hand to broadcast the best of the action during the 2020 Cheltenham Festival. Yet, few viewers know what it’s like behind the television camera at the “greatest show on turf”.

Katie Walsh is no stranger to success at the Cheltenham Festival. During her time in the saddle, Walsh – who’s brother, Ruby retired with a grand total of 59 Festival winners – entered the winners’ enclosure at Cheltenham on three occasions. The last of her victories came in 2018, where she rode Relegate to a surprise victory in the Champion Bumper for the Festival’s most successful trainer, Willie Mullins.

Since hanging up the saddle, Katie Walsh has become an ambassador for bookmaker Betway, providing readers with expert insights and tips on her weekly blog. With the 2020 Cheltenham Festival just around the corner, Walsh took presenter, Nick Luck and the Betway camera crew on a “behind the scenes” tour of Cheltenham racecourse.
