WGC-Mexico Championship (February 20-23)
The WGC-Mexico Championship has only been staged at Club de Golf Chapultepec for the last three years, but there is one thing that sticks out and that is to focus on the world’s leading players.
This year may see Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson among the absentees, but it still remains a high-class field set to tee it up in the first of the WGC events for 2020.
Dustin Johnson (15/2 Unibet) simply has to be on your radar. He is the reigning champion having defeated Rory McIlroy by five shots last year and also won the event in its first year in Mexico in 2017 when holding off Tommy Fleetwood by a shot.
Johnson warmed up for the defence of his title with a 10th place finish in the Genesis Invitational last weekend, and I expect big things of him. His season has had a seventh place in the Tournament of Champions, runner-up in the Saudi International and 32nd in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but everything looks to have been geared towards peaking in Mexico.
Xander Schauffele (20/1 bet365) could be set for a big week of things. The American was runner-up in the Tournament of Champions in the opening event of 2020, and his most recent tournaments have been good but lacking at spark in finishing 16th and 23rd in the Phoenix Open and Genesis Invitational.
There’s nothing standing out about that form, but again he looks like he might be set to peak. His previous two efforts in the WGC-Mexico resulted 18th and 14th place finishes and he playing solidly enough to think he can feature come Sunday.
