Formula 1’s young guns upstaged newly-crowned world champion Lewis Hamilton in the Brazilian Grand Prix a fortnight ago, denying him an 11th race win of the season and ending his bid for a career best haul of 12 victories in a single season. The Mercedes ace was forced to settle for a third place finish behind Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly, but a collision with Red Bull’s Alexander Albion late on resulted in demotion that saw him plummet from third down to seventh place in the final results. Hamilton accepted ‘total blame’ for the incident and while he will have been disappointed to drop down to seventh, the incident did show that the six-time world champion has no intention of taking his foot off the gas in the final few races despite having the F1 title sewn up. The 34-year-old will have one final opportunity to take his haul of race wins to 11 in this weekend’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and this is a race that Mercedes have dominated in recent years. ‘The Silver Arrows’ have claimed top spot in each of the past five seasons and Hamilton is the most successful driver in the history of this race having taken the chequered flag no less than four times. So given his history here and how aggressive he was last time out, we have to back Hamilton for the win on Sunday.
