The 2022-23 Serie A season kicks-off on the Saturday 13th August, with champions AC Milan beginning their campaign at home to Udinese. Here at BettingPro.com we have scoured the outright markets to provide the best betting tips and predictions on an exciting campaign ahead!
The Rossoneri beat arch rivals Inter by two points to win the Scudetto and another exciting campaign is expected, with the two Milanese rivals, Juventus and potentially Roma all set to battle it out for the title.
Winner
Serie A is once again expected to be one of the most closely fought top flight divisions across the whole of Europe, with arguably four sides in real contention.
Champions Milan have so far had a quiet window, with Charles De Ketelaere and Divock Origi coming in to the side to boost their attacking talent. The loss of Franck Kessie to Barcelona is a big one and it remains to be seen how that affects the side. The concern for Milan is that with other teams spending well and rehashing their squads, they could find themselves overtaken this season.
Arch rivals Inter have been much busier than their neighbours, bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and goalkeeper Andre Onana on free transfers and Joaquin Correa from Lazio for £23.6 million. However, it’s the return of Romelu Lukaku that could well swing the title in the Nerrazzuri’s favour, especially if he scores anywhere near the 23 and 24 league goals he scored in his two previous seasons at the Giuseppe Meazza.
Behind those, both Juventus and Roma have been busy and offer the main alternatives to the Milanese pair. Juve had a disappointing season but have come out firing in the transfer market, bringing Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria on free transfers. The losses of Paulo Dybala and Mathias De Ligt should be manageable, although they may be a little light in central defence, unless they bring in another player.
Roma were the ones to sign Paulo Dybala, with the Argentine’s arrival to Jose Mourinho’s side seeing him break 24 hour shirt sale records, with fans going wild. Mourinho has managed to keep the majority of his top players at the club, while bringing in a couple of others, including defender Zeki Celic from Lille and Nemanja Matic from Man United, a player that the Special One trusts implicitly in his side. The Europa Conference League winners will be better equipped this season and under their manager they could make a solid run for the Scudetto.
Overall Inter look very strong, with a quality goalkeeper signing and the expected return to form of Lukaku and that should be enough to propel them to the title.
Top 4 Finish / Challengers
Behind these potential title challengers, Napoli and Atalanta look the next best, along with Lazio, but they are more likely to have to settle for a top four finish at best.
The battle for the Top 4 places looks relatively set in stone, with Milan, Inter and Juventus all odds on to do so according to the betting, however it’s the fourth and final place that looks up for grabs, with Napoli, Roma and Lazio all in with a genuine shout.
As mentioned above, Roma’s signing of Paulo Dybala is a major statement and having won the UEFA Conference League, the capital based side are expected to push on with their confidence understandably high.
Napoli will be without Kalidou Koulibaly and Lorenzo Insigne for the new season and despite bringing in promising Korean defender, Kim Min-Jae from Fenerbahce, the decline may well continue for the Partenopei.
Lazio finished six points off the top four last season and will once again be relying on goal machine Ciro Immobile to propel the other Rome based side up the table. They have been spending in the window so far, albeit on relatively unknown quantities, including Nicolo Casale from Verona and Luis Maximiano from Granada, however they have brought in some useful experience in Alessio Romagnoli and Matias Vecino.
In general, Roma are expected to fill the last of the four Champions League places, Lazio could be the one to most closely challenge their arch-rivals.
Relegation
The relegation battle is another market that looks pretty sown up if we go by the betting market, with newly promoted Cremonese and Lecce expected to go straight back down along with Salernitana, who survived by a point last season.
Monza are the only one of the promoted sides who look genuinely capable of surviving in the top flight, having made a relatively big splash in the transfer market and bringing in the likes of Andrea Ranocchia and Stefano Sensi on loan.
Both Empoli and Spezia are expected to struggle, despite Empoli surprisingly dropping £8.5 million on Gugliamo Vicario from Cagliari, along with loan signings.
Spezia have been a little more conservative in their spending, bringing in Kevin Agudelo from Genoa for £2.7 million, but the loan signings of Caldara and Maldini from Milan, Kovalenko from Atalanta and the free signing of defender Albin Ekdal, puts the Aquilotti in a stronger position in my opinion.
Top Scorer
This looks a straight battle between three players for the Capocannoniere, with last season’s top goalscorer Ciro Immobile of Lazio expected to be pushed all of the way by runner-up Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus and the returning Romelu Lukaku of Inter.
Ciro Immobile has scored in excess of 20 goals in five of the last six seasons and looks destined to continue that run. However, he is now 32 years old, so he may need to be managed a little for fitness, especially with a European campaign ahead.
Vlahovic joined Juve from Fiorentina midseason and scored seven in fifteen and there is clearly more to come, but the return of Romelu Lukaku is a huge factor here, having joined Inter on loan after a disastrous season at Chelsea.
The Belgian scored 47 league goals over two seasons for Inter and will be chomping at the bit to get back to scoring ways. He was clearly not played to his strengths at Chelsea and with Inter able to utilise him in his best position once again, it’s difficult to see anyone taking the top scorer title away from him this season.
