West Ham United are struggling near the foot of the Premier League ladder this season, if they end up going down, how many of their star players will they keep?
Their prized asset at the moment is England international Declan Rice. The talented midfielder has played seven times for England after stating that was the country he wanted to represent after representing Republic of Ireland at U16, U17, U19, U21 and first-team level.
He started his career in the Chelsea academy before moving to West Ham at the age of 14 after being released from Stamford Bridge. Rice burst onto the scene in 2017 and has been a mainstay in the Hammers midfield ever since.
He will not want to be plying his trade in the Championship, so let’s look at the clubs looking to sign him if West Ham are relegated:
Declan Rice’s Next Club: Chelsea @ 5/6 Paddy Power
Chelsea will not be the first team to pay over the odds for a player they already had in their ranks. The Blues have a habit of signing up the best midfielders at other clubs, only for them to not fulfil their potential when they play for Chelsea. Victor Moses, Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater are just three that spring to mind. Rice is a quality player, but Chelsea might not be his best option if he wants to be playing regular football. He may as well stay at West Ham.
Declan Rice’s Next Club: Manchester United @ 4/1 Paddy Power
A few months ago, I would have said Manchester United should go for a player like Declan Rice. But since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and the new-found form of Fred, the Red Devils are not short of quality in the engine room. Rice would be a good addition, but would he replace the two already mentioned or even Scott McTominay? I’m not sure he would. United would probably be signing him just to get someone in and appease the fans.
Declan Rice’s Next Club: Manchester City @ 8/1 Paddy Power
Declan Rice would be a great asset to Manchester City. He would link up well with Kevin de Bruyne to allow the Belgian playmaker to do his own stuff, while Rice tackled anything that moved. If Rice did join City, he could be the final jigsaw in the piece that sees them win the Champions League. That is if they get their two-year ban lifted. If they are banned from Europe, then Rice will probably not join City.
Declan Rice’s Next Club: Tottenham Hotspur @ 12/1 Paddy Power
Rice is already a legend at West Ham. If he wants to remain one, then he cannot join Tottenham Hotspur. The rivalry between the two teams in fierce, and he will never be forgiven if he went to Spurs. To be honest, he might never be forgiven if he moves to anyone. West Ham are a fickle bunch when it comes to losing players. Just ask Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Paul Ince.
