Lionel Messi sent shockwaves through the world of football by declaring his intention to leave Barcelona, so the biggest question in the game right now is where will the Argentinian magician make his next home?
Messi has enjoyed a glittering and trophy-laden career since arriving at the Camp Nou as a 13-year-old back in 2000, but after a disappointing 2019/20 campaign that was ended by a 8-2 thumping at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League, he has declared his desire to leave.
The 33-year-old superstar faxed the club in late August and informed them that he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave on a free transfer immediately, but this could get messy because Barcelona reportedly believe that the clause has expired and the player does have one year remaining on his deal with a 700million Euro buy-out clause in it.
So what happens next? Will Messi be allowed to leave the Camp Nou for free? Could he sit out the 2020/21 season? Or will another club provide Barcelona with an offer for the want-away star that they cannot refuse?
Only time will tell, but there will be a host of cash-rich clubs keeping a close eye on the situation with Manchester City leading the charge ahead of several other Premier League rivals. Could we finally get an answer to the age old question, “yes, but can Messi do it on a cold and rainy night in *insert Premier League club here*?”
Or could Messi follow in the footsteps of former team-mate Neymar and swap Barcelona for Paris St Germain? Or what are the chances that he takes a page out of long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s book by swapping Spain for Italy? Could they end their storied rivalry by actually becoming team-mates at Juventus?
