Eurovision 2022: Betting Tips & Predictions

Brett Curtis /

Eurovision returns on Saturday 14th May, with Turin hosting one of the most-watched television events across the globe after Italy's triumph in 2021. Here at we have got you covered with all of the in's and out's of the music contest, as well as providing some interesting betting angles for you to consider!

What is the Eurovision Song Contest?

The Eurovision Song Contest, often known simply as Eurovision, is the longest-running annual international televised music competition, having been held every year since 1956 (apart from 2020).

As of 2021, 52 different countries have competed in at Eurovision at least once, with only the ‘Big Five’ – Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom – currently guaranteed annual qualification for the event.

Where is Eurovision 2022 being held?

Eurovision is being hosted in Turin, Italy, on Saturday 14th May 2022. This is as a result of Italy winning the 2021 edition in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Since 1980, the winner has always hosted the following year’s event.

Which nations are competing at Eurovision 2022?

As mentioned, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom are granted automatic qualification. This is largely due to these five nations contributing more money towards the song contest than other nations.

Joining them in 2022 will be 20 other nations who have come through qualifying, including six-time winners Sweden, five-time champions Netherlands and three-time winners Norway.

Which nations are the bookmakers’ favourites to win Eurovision 2022?

Expected to challenge once again are hosts and reigning champions Italy, who are around the 8/1 mark with most bookmakers. They will be represented by Mahmood and Blanco, who won the Sanremo Music Festival earlier this year with their track “Brividi”. Mahmood finished second at Eurovision in 2019.

Also leading the market are six-time winners Sweden, who are around the 7/1 mark. They will be represented by Cornelia Jakobs, who will sing “Hold Me Closer”.

Interestingly, United Kingdom have had a late surge in the market, with Sam Ryder’s “Space Man” considered to be around the 6/1 mark.

Spain are also attracting plenty of interest at 16/1.

Which bookmakers are offering odds on Eurovision 2022?

The vast majority of leading online bookmakers are offering odds on Eurovision 2022, including bet365, Sky Bet and Paddy Power.

Which markets are bookmakers offering to bet on at Eurovision 2022?

At the time of writing, the only market to bet on is the Outright Winner, but we expect there to be more offered closer to the Final. We will keep an eye out for you and offer any tips we like the look of.

How accurate are Eurovision odds?

While Italy were only fifth-favourites (around the 9/1 mark) heading into last year’s Eurovision before winning, Netherlands and Israel were both favourites heading into 2019 and 2018 respectively and lived up to their billing as they triumphed in style.

Moreover, those in the top three of the odds have largely done well in the last three events, with Estonia’s eighth-placed finish in 2018 representing the poorest return of those nations.

Clearly, then, we can expect Italy and Sweden to go strong in 2022, even if they do not end up prevailing overall.

Can any trends help us predict a Eurovision winner?

Betting odds aside, those nations singing in English do tend to fare better than other nations, perhaps due to the global understanding and appeal of the language.

Indeed, 34 of the winning 68 songs have been sung in at least partial English, with only French (15) prevailing more than three times.

This could count against one of the favourites Italy, then, whose representatives are singing exclusively in their mother tongue. However, they have won on multiple occasions in the past in this manner.

Another trend which is stacked against Italy is that no nation has won successive Eurovision’s since Ireland triumphed for the third consecutive year in 1994. This doesn’t mean they cannot win, of course, but people don’t tend to enjoy repeat winners in any contest.

In terms of style of music, a wide-range of genres have won Eurovision in recent years, including pop, rock and dance, so there are little conclusions to draw here.

Who will win Eurovision in 2022?

Rather than backing a short-priced favourite, we think Spain can challenge at a big price.

For Spain, who are surely due a win having failed to win outright since 1968, Chanel’s “SlowMo” is a catchy latino pop song which you can envisage proving popular with European audiences. Europop and Eurodance do tend to prove popular at Eurovision, and these latino-themed tracks have proven to be successful over the last decade.

Chanel is conventionally attractive which always helps in the music business and on talent shows, while she sings in at least partial-English too, potentially adding to her appeal across the globe.

We’ll keep an eye out for any each-way markets when the final draws closer!
