2022 Premier League Darts Tips and Predictions: Week 14

Only seven players will be competing in night 14 of the Premier League Darts in Sheffield after James Wade was taken ill in Germany at the weekend.

‘The Machine’ – who has won two nights this season – was forced to withdraw from the European Open at the weekend as he was rushed to hospital with heart problems.

His heart was racing, he had high blood pressure, nausea and dizziness and he has not yet been cleared to return home to his wife and child.

Wade was scheduled to face Joe Cullen, but he will not be in Sheffield, meaning Cullen gets a bye to the semi-final.

Welshman Jonny Clayton continues to get better with every passing week. He leads the standings with 34 points thanks to four wins. He leads Michael van Gerwen by six points and victory in Sheffield will see him open up a bigger lead.

Clayton faces off against Michael Smith in their quarter-final. For once, Smith heads into this tournament full of confidence. The St Helens thrower won his first tournament of 2022 at the weekend.

He won the Players Championship 14 at Wigan this weekend. It might not be the television title he is craving, but it’s a win, nonetheless.

Unfortunately, his confidence will not help him on Thursday. Clayton is in the zone at the moment. I successfully backed Clayton to win last week in Glasgow, and I am backing him again.

What is the new format for Premier League of Darts?

The Cazoo Premier League returns this year with a brand new format for the 18th year of this prestigious competition.

This year, the Premier League will see eight players go head-to-head in 16 mini-events before a play-off series will determine the new champion.

The Premier League has had a number of format changes since it was unveiled in 2005. It started off with seven players, before it changed to eight them 10, while recent years has seen some challengers get involved in the action.

The Premier League will still be played in 17 arenas across the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany this year and offer a bumper, increased £1 million prize fund.

The new development this year will see eight players compete with 16 league nights being individual events with a quarter-final, semi-final and final over the best of 11 legs. The winner of each night will also receive a £10,000 bonus.

Ranking points will be awarded during each night. Five points will go to the winner, three to the runner-up and two to the losing semi-finalists. The points will be added to a league table with the top four qualifying to the play-offs.

Across the 16 weeks, players will face each other twice in a quarter-final tie to form the draw for 14 nights, with the additional two nights (night eight and night 16) seeing the stars face off again in a draw bracket based on the league table following night seven and night 15 respectively.

Each night will see quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final played over the best of 11 legs (first to six).
Each player will meet the other seven players twice over the course of the season in a quarter-final game, plus two further nights will feature additional fixtures in the same format.

League Points

Night Winner – 5 points + £10,000 bonus
Runner-Up – 3 points
Semi-Finalists – 2 points

2022 Premier League Darts: The Players

The eight players who will contest the Cazoo Premier League have been revealed.

Bradford-born Joe Cullen – who won this first TV event by winning the Ladbrokes Masters in Milton Keynes – will make his Premier League debut.

Last year’s winner Jonny Clayton has also been selected, while world champion Peter Wright will also be involved. Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price – who both missed out in 2021 – make their Premier League return.

The remaining three players include five-time Premier League winner Michael van Gerwyn, James Wade and Gary Anderson.

The announcement of the competitors comes alongside the news that the 2022 Cazoo Premier League will be the first event to feature the Winmau Blade 6 dartboard under a new partnership which was revealed on Monday.

Who Will Lift the Trophy

Backing your favourite player to win the trophy is probably the most popular market out there. This market is plain and simple. Just select which player you feel will win the competition, find the best odds, place your bets and watch all the action unfold.

Treble Boost

Sky Bet have thrown their weight behind PDC darts events over the years, and the Premier League Darts will be no different. They like to have a Treble Boost available on most matches. This allows you to back your selected player to win the match, hit the most 180s and get the highest overall checkout.

Most 180s

If you do not fancy risking your money on the Treble Boost, backing your selected player just to hit the most 180s is also available. You might be backing someone like Ryan Searle in a TV event, but you cannot see him hitting the big checkouts. Improve your chances by just backing ‘Heavy Metal’ to hit the most maximums.
