The PDC World Championship returns in front of fans at the Alexandra Palace in December for another exciting few weeks of darts' most prestigious event, and here at BettingPro.com we are taking a look at how the seeding will take shape at the tournament and what it may mean from a betting perspective.
How does the PDC World Championship format work?
There are seven rounds of the PDC World Championship, with 96 players competing in it. 64 of these players enter at the first round stage – more on this later – with the prevailing 32 facing 32 seeds in the second round.
All matches are played as the standard single in, double out format, requiring players to score 501 points to win a leg, finishing on either a double or a bullseye. All matches are played to set format, with each set being the best of five legs (first to three).
The matches get longer as the tournament progresses, with both the first round and the second round starting at best of five sets. The third and fourth rounds increase to best of seven sets, with the quarter-final being best of nine, the semi-final best of 11, and the final best of 13.
Generally, there is an afternoon session followed by an evening session, meaning there are plenty of matches for viewers to watch and punters to bet on at the Ally Pally!
Who qualifies for the PDC World Championship?
The top 32 players from the PDC Order of Merit automatically qualify for the World Championship and enter as seeds at the second round stage.
The PDC Order of Merit is essentially a world darts rankings system, which is based on prize money won from ranking tournaments over a two-year period.
The World Championship seeding is directly based on a players’ darts world rankings at the time of the draw, so as the World No. 1 and defending champion Gerwyn Price will be this year’s No. 1 seed, Peter Wright will be the No. 2 seed, Michael van Gerwen the No. 3 seed, etc.
This seeding system means that these highly ranked players cannot meet each other until the latter stages as they are kept apart in the draw. From a betting perspective, it is worth considering which players you consider to have a kinder or tougher path to the final than others.
The top 32 players from the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit (who have not already qualified from the above criteria) also automatically qualify for the World Championship, but they enter at the first round stage, and they are not seeded.
This means that, should they progress in the first round, they are guaranteed to face a seed in the second round and therefore likely to be considered underdogs to make it any further in the competition.
Among these players at the 2022 World Championship are 2007 champion Raymond van Barneveld and two-time winner Adrian Lewis, so the seeds will likely be hoping to avoid them in the second round given their pedigree and talent ceiling.
The Pro Tour Order of Merit is based on prize money won in Players Championship events and European Tour events over a rolling 12-month period, rather than a two-year period like the standard Order of Merit.
These 32 players are joined in the first round by 32 qualifiers from all over the globe. Fallon Sherrock, one of the best female darts players to play in the PDC World Championships, recently reached the Grand Slam of Darts quarter-final and qualifies for the 2022 World Championship as the Women’s Series OoM leader.
- Gerwyn Price (2021 winner)
- Peter Wright (2020 winner)
- Michael van Gerwen (three-time champion)
- James Wade (UK Open 2021 winner)
- Dimitri Van den Bergh (World Matchplay 2020 winner)
- Gary Anderson (two-time champion)
- Jose de Sousa (Premier League Darts 2021 runner-up)
- Jonny Clayton (Premier League Darts 2021 winner)
These top eight seeds will be kept apart until the quarter-final stage, but there are almost certainly set to be plenty of upsets along the way at Darts’ greatest and most prestigious tournament! Here at BettingPro.com we will be keeping our finger on the pulse with betting tips, predictions and accumulators throughout the tournament.
