Bangladesh held their nerve in the field to secure a four-run victory to clinch the ODI series against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
Batting first, Bangladesh overcame the loss of Liton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto inside 11 overs to post a commanding total of 322-8 off their 50 overs.
Opener Tamim Iqbal hit his first ODI century in almost two years as he smashed 20 fours and three sixes on his way to posting 158 runs off 136 deliveries.
He became the fifth wicket to fall at 292-5 as he was caught by Tinotenda Mutombodzi off the bowling of Carl Mumba as he was looking to nail his fourth maximum.
Iqbal was backed up well by Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah with 55 and 41 runs respectively, while Mumba and Donald Tiripano were the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe with two apiece.
The tourists had a mammoth task in front of them if they were to level this ODI series. Half-centuries from Tinashe Kamunhukame, Wesley Madhevere and Sikandar Raza put Zimbabwe kept them in the hunt, but it still looked like an uphill task.
After Raza was dismissed, Zimbabwe were 225-7 with nine overs to go and the still needed 98 more runs to win. Remarkably, they took it to the last ball of the game before losing.
Richmond Mutumbami and Mutombodzi hit 19 and 34 respectively, while Tiripano started to slash the willow and he smashed 55 off 28 deliveries with five sixes, but they ultimately fell short.
Zimbabwe needed 18 to win off the final four balls and two consecutive sixes from Tiripano left them needed six off two and a chance of an unlikely victory. Unfortunately for the tourists, Al-Amin Hossain kept his nerve with ball in hand and didn’t give Tiripani a chance to smash the winning runs.
This was a thriller and will fill Bangladesh with confidence that they can win the nail-biting games. With the series over, we are backing them to complete a clean sweep as it will be difficult to lift Zimbabwe after such a narrow defeat.
Bangladesh have some firepower in their batting line up and we believe that Iqbal will continue where he left off with another swashbuckling innings. We are backing him to be the top scorer for the home side.
