William Hill reveals best & worst of 2018 World Cup betting

France celebrate winning the World Cup (credit:Credit by bettingpro)

France were crowned world champions with a 4-2 win over Croatia in Sunday’s World Cup Final, but how did the bookmakers fare during what has been widely regarded as one of the best World Cups in history?

At the start of the tournament, William Hill predicted that £1.2billion would be wagered across the industry on the tournament, and while it may take a couple of days to work out whether that figure has been met or even exceeded, here is a run-down of the good and bad for Britain’s bookies…

Highest Turnover Game

Colombia v England was the highest turnover game of the tournament, which attracted £6.5million worth of bets.

Lowest Turnover Game

Morocco v Iran was the lowest turnover game, attracting less than £500,000 worth of bets.

Biggest Negative Swing

England v Colombia saw a possible £2.5million loss turn into a £2.5million win for the bookies as Colombia equalised in the last minute of the game.

Biggest Negative Swing

Toni Kroos’ last minute winner for Germany against Sweden saw a £4million swing in favour of the punters. William Hill was set to win £1.5million as the game ticked over to the last minute. However, it ended up being a £2.5million loss.

Top Scorer

Harry Kane bagging the Golden Boot resulted in a small loss for Hills, but Neymar, Romelu Lukaku and Antoine Griezmann would have been much worse.

Winner

France were a decent result winning a seven figure sum for William Hill. England’s march to the semi-final meant that much of the money that came in during the knockout stages was for the Three Lions and meant that France quickly became a good result.

World Cup 2022 winner odds

9/2 France; 5/1 Brazil; 6/1 Germany; 6/1 Spain; 8/1 Belgium; 10/1 England; 12/1 Argentina; 12/1 Italy; 14/1 Holland; 16/1 Croatia; 33/1 BAR
