England are 18/1 outsiders to become world champions after manager Gareth Southgate revealed his 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

There were very few surprises in Southgate’s final selection, but there were some notable names missing from the 23-man group with the likes of Joe Hart, Chris Smalling, Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Wilshere overlooked by the England boss.

“I believe this is a squad which we can be excited about,” Southgate told reporters after the big reveal. “It is a young group, but with some really important senior players so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance.

“We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team, but players that are equally comfortable in possession of the ball and I think people can see the style of play we’ve been looking to develop.”

Southgate may be excited about this group of players, but his selection has done little to convince bookmakers that England’s wait to be world champions again will come to an end in Russia this summer.

bet365 has England as 18/1* outsiders behind usual suspects Brazil (4/1), Germany (9/2), Spain (6/1), France (13/2) and Argentina (9/1), while Belgium are fancied ahead of the Three Lions having been priced up at 11/1 to finally deliver on the big stage after years of hype.

The bookmakers do expect this England crop to at least better their 2014 counterparts by progressing from the group stage, going 5/1 that they fall at the first hurdle once again, but they expect the clock to start ticking once the knockout stage gets underway.

Last-16 and quarter-final exits have each been priced up at 11/5, while at 5/1 bet365 believe a semi-final exit for England is just as likely as a group-stage exit. The Three Lions are 10/1 to finish as runners-up.
