Poland scored a straight-set victory (25-15, 25-22, 25-17) over Australia on Friday to earn an 8-0 win-loss record after the second round of the tournament, whilst USA were also 3-0 winners over Tunisia (25-14, 25-19, 29-27) to leave them one point above the Poles at the top of the standing.

Bartosz Kurek received his fourth Most Impressive Player award for Poland at the Toyama City Gymnasium with his 21-point contribution in the shortest match of the tournament so far at 1 hour 20 minutes and a performance that pleased coach Stephane Antiga.

"We played a very serious game," Antiga told

"We played especially good in service, which was one element we’ve been working on in the few opportunities of training we’ve had here. And almost everybody played. I’m very happy with our three games in Toyama and I think we are ready for the next round in Tokyo, which is very important."

Poland are now one of four teams who are realistically in contention for one of the two Rio 2016 Olympic Games berths along with the USA, Italy and Russia.

USA and Poland stay in control on eight wins with Russia and Italy hot on their heels on seven, whilst Argentina and Japan are on six and five respectively as action moves to Tokyo.

The United States will move into the final round high on confidence having dropped just two sets in the tournament thus far with Matt Anderson in form as he led the scorers on 22 points against Tunisia.
"It's always a challenge to play in a tournament like this," said US coach John Speraw.
"We played well in the second set and had a good run of points. Tunisia did a good job of digging and service in the third set. We lost some focus in the third set but were able to regain it. I think the way we played that set will help us down the line. I'm grateful to win this match in three sets. A team with only one loss might not get the Olympic bid in this tournament. It could come down to the set counts."
