The United States captured their first ever gold medal in the FIVB Women's World Volleyball Championship after beating China in the final in Milan on Sunday.

Kimberly Hill fired 20 points to lead the Americans to a 27-25 25-20 16-25 26-24 victory at the Mediolanum Forum.

The Tournament MVP got plenty of support from her teammates.

Team captain Christa Harmotto-Dietzen had 15 points while Foluke Akinradewo added 14.

Kelly Murphy chipped in 13 points for the US spikers, who finally nailed an elusive world title after runner-up finishes in 1967 and 2002.

Zeng Chunlei topscored for the Chinese with 20 points.

Zhu Ting and Hui Ruoqi added 15 points apiece while Yuan Xinyue submitted 11.

"We came here to make history and we made it. It was a tough battle, but we made it," said USA head coach Karch Kiraly, who added another feather in his cap being the only person in history to have won Olympic gold medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.

Meanwhile, Brazil settled for the bronze medal after beating host Italy 25-15 25-13 22-25 22-25 15-7 in an epic third-place playoff.
