FIVB Women's U-23 World Championship - China, Dominican Republic fight for gold

China is aiming to sweep the inaugural U-23 championship (credit:FIVB)

Either China or the Dominican Republic will be crowned champions in the inaugural FIVB Women's U-23 World Championship in Mexico today.

The Chinese extended their unbeaten streak after beating Asian rivals Japan 27-25 26-24 25-13 in last night's semifinal at the Baja California High Performance Center in Tijuana. 

Liu Yanhan led the winners with 18 points while Wang Qi and Yang Zhou chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.

The Dominicans also needed three sets to dispose of NORCECA nemesis United States 25-21 25-21 27-25 in the other semifinal.

Brayelin Martinez topscored for the Caribbean powerhouse with 21 points while Yonkaira Peña added 11.
