UFC Fight Night Long Island for Saturday, July 15. Will former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman get his career back on track by beating rising 185lb star Kelvin Gastelum? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips for UFC Fight Night.

UFC Fight Night Long Island Predictions

Chris Weidman v Kelvin Gastelum predictions & betting tips

Right now you would find it hard to find a fighter in more desperate need of victory than former middleweight champion Chris Weidman. ‘The All-American’ was on top of the 185lb world when he ended Anderson Silva’s lengthy reign over the division in July 2013 and followed it up with three successful defences, the last of which came when he stopped Vitor Belfort in the first round back in May 2015.

However, his career has come off the rails since then. Luke Rockhold ripped the middleweight title away from him with a fourth-round stoppage in December 2015 and his quest to regain the belt has fallen apart thanks to stoppage defeats to Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi. Weidman is now in danger of sliding out of the title picture altogether, so he simply has to win in Long Island on Saturday night.

The problem is he finds himself taking on a man whose stock has never been higher in Kelvin Gastelum. The 25-year-old American has followed up a decision win over ex-welterweight champion Johny Hendricks with a third-round stoppage of Tim Kennedy, and he did stop Vitor Belfort back in March only for a failed drug test to turn that result into a No Contest. That last incident has kept him out of the middleweight rankings at this time, but a win on Saturday would rectify that and a Gastelum win is what I expect to see.

Weidman’s rise to the top of the division and his subsequence title reign were hardly the stuff of legend, and when he has stepped into the Octagon with elite fighters in their prime he has been stopped violently (see his fights with Rockhold, Romero and Mousasi). Gastelum has certainly staked his claim to be an elite fighter entering his prime, and his ability to stop an opponent via strikes or via submission makes him very dangerous. He should stop Weidhman here.

Dennis Bermudez v Darren Elkins predictions & betting tips

This is a fight between two men looking to start next week in the top 10 of the featherweight rankings – but who will it be? Darren Elkins is on the brink of breaking into the top 10 after his first KO victory in four years extended his winning run to four straight fights in March, but it would not be unfair to say that ‘The Damage’ has not been taking on fighters in Dennis Bermudez’ league. ‘The Menace’ saw his sequence of back-to-back wins ended by ‘Korean Zombie’ last time out, but he has a better takedown defence than Elkins and his striking is more accurate and powerful. Bermudez should bounce back.

Patrick Cummins v Gian Villante predictions & betting tips

Gian Villante’s quest to break into the top 10 was halted by a knockout defeat to Mauricio Rua back in March, but Patrick Cummins is the perfect opponent for him to bounce back against. Cummins has lost three of his last five fights via KO/TKO and he tends to struggle against pressure fighters that pack plenty of punching power – ie. fighters like Villante. The hometown favourite should win here.
