UFC 220 predictions for Saturday, January 20. Will Stipe Miocic & Daniel Cormier successfully defend their UFC titles against dangerous, heavy-hitting strikers? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips for UFC 220.

Stipe Miocic v Francis Ngannou

Stipe Miocic will make his third defence of the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 220, and for many he is facing the biggest threat to his rein in the form of hard-hitting Francis Ngannou, who has rocketed up the heavyweight ladder thanks to a string of violent finishes since his arrival in the UFC just two years ago.

Ngannou has gone 6-0 since signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is yet to go beyond the second round, with five victories coming via KO/TKO and one coming via submission. The 31-year-old from Cameroon recorded the biggest win of his career when he destroyed Alistair Overeem in less than two minutes back in December, but can he keep his streak going by dethroning Miocic on January 20?

Micoc claims the UFC wants Ngannou to rip the title away from him in Boston and considering all of the hype surrounding the challenger ahead of this fight, it is understandable that the champion is feeling pretty miffed right now. However, Miocic is more than capable of letting his talent do the talking and I am backing the champion to put a halt to the Ngannou hype train here.

The challenger certainly possesses the punching power that can end a fight in the blink of an eye, but Miocic has the more rounded game when it comes to these two men. The 35-year-old is a former Golden Gloves boxing champion that boasts a combination of great technical ability and excellent finishing power (76% of his wins have come via KO/TKO), but more importantly he has great wrestling and that could be key here.

If Micoc stands at the edge of Ngannou’s range he is dicing with death, as the old saying goes, so I expect him to grapple with the challenger in an attempt to wear him down and take away the violent striking power possessed by his opponent. Once he has done that, Miocic will either add another KO/TKO success to his CV or he will control the fight until the final bell to get the nod from the judges.

Daniel Cormier v Volkan Oezdemir

Like heavyweight title challenger Ngannou, Volkan Oezdemir is another man who has enjoyed a rapid rise up the ranks to land a title shot. The 28-year-old Swiss fighter has gone 3-0 since signing on with the UFC, and he secured a crack at the light-heavyweight title when he finished Jimi Manuwa inside just 42 seconds back in July, showcasing the striking power that has resulted in 75% of his victories coming via KO/TKO.

That finishing power has many believing he will dethrone 205lb champion Daniel Cormier in Boston on January 20, but I am not jumping on that bandwagon because we all know what the champion can do against devastating strikers.

Just look at Cormier’s two title defences against Anthony Johnson – a fearsome striker who was dominated and finished by DC when the two men met in May 2016 and April 2017. Both of those victories came via rear-naked choke and I expect we will see something similar here, with Cormier putting on a wrestling clinic to erase Oezdemir’s striking power before forcing him to tap out.
