Bookmaker Paddy Power is predicting a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz after Conor McGregor gave up the UFC featherweight title he has held for a year.

McGregor became the first Irishman to hold a UFC title when he dethroned Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds last year, but the 28-year-old failed to make a single defence of the 145lb crown as a rivalry with Nate Diaz and his quest to become a two-weight world champion took his attention away from the featherweight division.

McGregor avenged his sole UFC loss to Diaz by beating the American in the summer, and his quest to become the first fighter to hold two UFC titles at the same time was realised when ‘The Notorious’ stopped Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205.

The two-weight champion claimed it would ‘take an army’ to relieve him of either belt, but the UFC has confirmed that McGregor has now been stripped of the featherweight title and that means we are a step closer to learning what is next for the company’s biggest star.

There have been rumours of an appearance for professional wrestling company WWE and there has also been speculation about a mega-fight with boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr, but it appears as though a first defence of the lightweight title will be McGregor’s next move.

Khabib Nurmagomedov took his unbeaten record to 24-0 when he stopped Michael Johnson on the UFC 205 undercard, and the Russian fighter wasted no time in calling out the winner of the main event showdown between McGregor and Eddie Alvarez. Paddy Power is now 17/10 that Nurmagomedov is the Irishman’s next opponent – but there is one man ahead of him in the betting.

A trilogy fight with Nate Diaz – the only man to beat the lightweight champion in the UFC – has been talked about ever since the Irishman won their rematch in the summer, and Paddy Power is 11/8 that McGregor-Diaz 3 is the Irishman’s next move.

A showdown with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is priced up at 11/2, while Paddy Power is 11/2 that McGregor takes on lightweight contender Tony Ferguson after ‘El Cucuy’ staked his own claim for a title shot with a unanimous decision win over former champion Rafael Dos Anjos.

A meeting with Nate Diaz’s brother, Nick, is now 9/1, while the same odds can be had for a fight with mixed martial arts legend Georges St-Pierre who has been linked with a return to the UFC for quite some time. A rematch with new featherweight champion Jose Aldo is now 10/1.
