Wimbledon Day 3: Three best bets for Wednesday July 3

Second round action begins today at Wimbledon and we’re back with our three best bets of the day.

Karen Khachanov vs Feliciano Lopez total games: Over 42.5 at 9/10 @ Unibet

I can see a marathon match playing out here. Khachanov, seeded 10th at The Championships this year, has been in poor form all season, but he does own a 2-0 record over Lopez, who despite his veteran status, is one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw after winning Queen’s a couple of weeks ago.

Lopez extended his winning streak to six matches with a straight sets victory over Marcos Giron in his opening round, while Khachanov was stretched to four sets by Korean qualifier Soon Woo Kwon. I’m hesitant to back Lopez for the win because Khachanov has the powerful game to blast him off the court from the baseline, but the Spaniard is in resurgent form and even if he doesn’t win, he should be able to make this a real battle.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this one went five sets with at least a couple of tiebreaks.

Fernando Verdasco to beat Kyle Edmund at 11/8 @ Ladbrokes

Verdasco owns two wins over Edmund on hardcourt and clay in the last 12 months and now has the chance to face him on the Brit’s worst surface of grass. Edmund still hasn’t really mastered the low bounce of grass and we can’t really take much from his first round win over Jaume Munar, who has barely played on the surface himself.

Verdasco meanwhile is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist and has made the second week on three other occasions - and he’s proven he has the game to take down Edmund twice before. Both players registered identical 6-4 6-4 6-4 opening round wins, with Verdasco taking out qualifier Kamil Majchrzak. Edmund’s big weapon is his forehand, but Verdasco can match the Brit’s firepower off that wing and has an underrated serve that can be very effective on grass. At the end of the day, I think Verdasco is a better player on this surface - but there’s always the risk of the Spaniard bottling it from a winning position…

Sofia Kenin to beat Dayana Yastremska in three sets at 3/1 @ bet365

It’s unfortunate that these two have to play in the second round, because neither would look out of place in the second week of Wimbledon.

Kenin has been one of the form players on tour this season, winning two WTA titles in Hobart and Mallorca, while she also beat Serena Williams on her way to the R16 at the French Open. Furthermore, it’s taken some of the very best to knock Kenin out of tournaments in recent months, including Petra Kvitova in Madrid, Karolina Pliskova in Rome and Ash Barty at Roland Garros.

Kenin got her Wimbledon campaign off to the perfect start with a clinical 6-4 6-2 win over Astra Sharma and appears primed for a deep run at The Championships - if she can make it past Yastremska, a former junior runner-up at Wimbledon.

Yastremska has been battling some injury issues in 2019, but she’s still one of the fastest rising talents on tour with three WTA titles under her belt in the last nine months. The teenage star beat last year’s quarter-finalist Camila Giorgi in straight sets in her opener, but Kenin poses a different threat and will make her play a lot more balls. I think Yastremska takes a set, but Kenin’s movement and ability to stay in rallies will propel her to victory in the end.
