Svitolina vs Andreescu predictions

Who can stop Bianca Andreescu? That’s turned into the big question of the BNP Paribas Open as the 18-year-old Canadian continues her breakthrough 2019 and a run that has brought her into a semifinal collision with sixth seed Elina Svitolina.

Just the third wildcard, after Martina Hingis and Serena Williams, to have made the semifinals of Indian Wells, Andreescu had already beaten Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki on her way to the final of Auckland in January, won Newport Beach and reached the semifinals in Acapulco and has now won more matches across all levels (26) than anyone else so far in 2019.

Andreescu’s 6-0, 6-1 win over Garbine Muguruza was an incredible sight – but there’s no denying that Muguruza connived in her own destruction.

Elina Svitolina won’t be nearly so obliging. The reigning WTA Finals Singapore champion is 13-4 so far in 2019 and was unable to defend her Brisbane or Dubai titles, but Svitolina is nothing if not tenacious – a quality that’s been showcased in her run to the Indian Wells semifinals, which has seen her win the longest match of the year against Ashleigh Barty in the round of 16 as well as surviving major challenges from Sofia Kenin and Marketa Vondrousova in long three-set matches.

Svitolina’s physical condition – she has her knee strapped, and needed a medical time-out on that knee against Barty – is a concern but if fit, she’ll pose a totally different challenge to Andreescu: A player who doesn’t miss a lot but can still be aggressive. One of the most impressive aspects of Andreescu’s game is her tactical intelligence and point construction but can she keep it up against the tenacious Svitolina for as long as it would take to get the win?

Svitolina vs Andreescu match stats

  • Andreescu has won 26 matches in 2019 and has won her only previous match against a top-10 player
  • Svitolina has spent well over six hours on court on her way to the semifinals
  • First meeting between the two

Svitolina vs Andreescu betting tips

These two have never faced off before and most bookmakers are making Svitolina the favourite – but only slightly: She’s 4/5 @ Ladbrokes to win while Andreescu is 1/1 @ William Hill.
Certainly Andreescu is an incredibly impressive young player and looked totally fantastic in her match against Muguruza – but Muguruza also gave up plenty of unforced errors. Svitolina won’t, and Andreescu will have to work much, much harder against the Ukrainian in order to be able to work her off the court and open up space to hit winners.

Svitolina has made it to the semifinals – just the second time in her career she’s got this far at a Premier Mandatory-level event – by dint of sheer tenacity, coming back from breaks down in decisive sets against Barty and Vondrousova, both of whom were arguably the better players in the match. I’d back her to do it again against Andreescu except for one thing: The length of time she’s spent on the court so far and the knee problem she’s having. The one thing I feel confident about is that it should be another long match.
