Stan Wawrinka injury doubt for US Open after withdrawing from Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters

Neil Roarty 3 Aug 2017

Stan Wawrinka has been pushed out to 14/1 to win the 2017 US Open after announcing that he will skip both the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters due to a knee injury.

Stan Wawrinka is now a top price of 14/1 with Skybet to defend his US Open crown at Flushing Meadows after announcing that he will skip the Masters 1000 events in both Montreal and Cincinnati due to a knee injury that has plagued him since Wimbledon.

In a statement released on his Facebook page Wawrinka said:

“After much backwards and forwards and consultations with my doctors and my team, unfortunately I have decided to skip Canada and Cincinnati to be on the safe side, even though I've been battling hard to make these events,

"Hugely disappointing for my fans and myself that I have to make this decision, but I need to be 100 percent confident before I resume competition till the injury that plagued me in Wimbeldon has been resolved.

Wawrinka had been one of the favourites to win the 2017 US Open after Novak Djokovic's withdrawal. The news that he will not play any warm-up events, and is likely to arrive in New York lacking fitness, means that he is no longer considered at the head of the betting.

Roger Federer is now a short priced 13/8 with bet365 to win the US Open with Rafael Nadal 10/3 second favourite at Skybet. Andy Murray is a best price of 7/1 with BetVictor to win the tournament that he won back in 2010.

Should Wawrinka fail to make it to New York then world number six Marin Cilic would most likely replace him as the 4th seed. This would be a huge advantage for the Croatian, who lifted the US Open title in 2014. Cilic is currently as big as 33/1 with Stan James but that price is almost certain to fall in the run up to the tournament.
