With Nishikori winning two of their first three meetings, it appeared as if Federer was going to be in for some tough battles with the Japanese star over the coming years, but that hasn’t come close to eventuating.

Indeed, Federer has won their last six encounters, including two straight set triumphs over the last two months in Shanghai and Paris. The 37-year-old also owns two victories over Nishikori inside the O2 Arena in London, winning ATP Finals round robin matches in 2014 and 2015, while Federer - playing in his first tournament in over six months - beat Nishikori on his way to the 2017 Australian Open title.

In my opinion, Nishikori’s inability to emerge victorious in this match-up since 2014 is more to his own regression over the last few years than Federer improving his game. And while it’s true that Nishikori has put together a superb season to qualify for London, going from outside the top 30 to inside the top 10, the truth is the Japanese has failed to produce his best tennis in big matches for the last few years now, which includes his failure to win a title for almost three seasons.

Nishikori doesn’t have the big serve or powerful weapons to win cheap points against Federer, which means he needs to rely on the Swiss to have an off day to have a chance at victory. It’s imperative to win quick points against Federer on serve, but Nishikori’s delivery is far from menacing, which as a result gives the 20-time major champion frequent looks and in turn builds pressure to hold. Watching the match-up, you always get a sense that it’s only a matter of time before Federer breaks and ultimately serves out the set.

Federer has come away with routine straight sets wins in Shanghai and Paris over the last month or so, and it would be a surprise if he didn’t make it a hat-trick of straight sets triumphs over Nishikori in London. The six-time ATP Finals champion has regained his confidence after picking up a ninth Basel crown and pushing Novak Djokovic to the limit in the Paris semi-finals, and he hasn’t lost a round robin match at the O2 since 2013 - a streak of nine straight wins.
