Nadal is seeking his first title in Shanghai, having lost the final to Nikolay Davydenko in the maiden edition of the tournament in 2009, and made semi-finals in 2013 and 2015. With the form he has been in, this could well be the year when he gets the job done. After going over three and a half years without winning a title on hard courts, Nadal is seeking his third consecutive title on the surface, following his successes at the US Open and Beijing. The Spaniard is on a twelve-match losing streak, and will expect to stretch that run when he takes on Donaldson on Wednesday. Nadal’s current run on hard courts is in keeping with a remarkable comeback year, which has already yielded a tour-leading six titles for the season, and has left him as the firm favourite to finish the season with the prestigious year-end Number One ranking.

Nadal had a series of near-misses on hard courts at the start of the year, losing finals at the Australian Open, Acapulco and Miami, but the switch to clay ushered in unprecedented success, even for the King of Clay, as the great Spaniard romped to tenth titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Roland Garros (and a fifth in Madrid as well). He dropped off a bit after that, losing early at Wimbledon, Montreal and Cincinnati, but he brushed aside doubts surrounding his form with a brilliant run to a third US Open title. The relentless Spaniard followed that up with a second Beijing title. Nadal saved two match points in his opening round against Pouille, but he got better as the tournament progressed, ending with a dominant win over an imploding Nick Kyrgios in the final. Nadal’s ability to maintain his focus, regardless of the surrounding distractions was again evident in the Beijing final, as the great Spaniard never took his foot off the gas, even as his opponent disintegrated.

Looking to halt the Spaniard in his strides is American Jared Donaldson, who has generally been good on hard courts in recent times.

After a slow start to the year, he had his first real impact on the tour in Miami, when he came through the qualifiers to reach the fourth round, but any momentum he had built in Miami was sucked away by the clay, where he won just two of seven main draw matches.

Donaldson reached the third round at Wimbledon, and has been OK since the switch to the hard court season.

His most eye-catching results were quarter finals in Cincinnati and Chengdu, while he made the third round in Washington and Montreal. He fell in five set to Lucas Pouille in the second round of the US Open. However, the 21-year-old comes in on the back of an opening round defeat in Beijing, where he lost in three sets to Tomas Berdych. Donaldson opened his Shanghai campaign with a hard-fought victory over Pablo Cuevas, recovering from dropping the opening set tie break to take the match 6-7 6-4 6-4 in his first main draw match in Shanghai. His reward for that is a first ever meeting with the world number one, Nadal.

Donaldson has played some really good tennis in recent weeks to get into the top 60- he peaked at a career-high 51 after reaching the quarter finals in Cincinnati, but he faces the ultimate test on Wednesday, the No. 1 player in the world, and not many have passed the test! The American will be encouraged by Nadal’s loss to Denis Shapovalov in Montreal, but on the evidence of the Spaniard’s run in Beijing, the chances of a similar upset in Shanghai are very low.
