Bookmakers have been forced to rethink the outright Australian Open odds for the women’s draw after favourite Serena Williams was sent crashing out of the tournament in the quarter-finals.

Williams had arrived in Melbourne looking to win the season-opening Grand Slam for the ninth time in her career and join Margaret Court as the most successful player in the history of Grand Slam tournaments with 24 titles, but that quest was brought to an end by Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday.

Pliskova made a brilliant start to their contest and boasted a set and a break lead during the second set, but she appeared to be a beaten women when Williams came storming back to level it up and then took a 5-1 lead in the deciding set.

However, the 26-year-old Czech showed incredible steel by saving four match points, and that proved to be the spark she needed as won the next six games to complete the biggest comeback of her entire career and wrap up a sensational 6-4 4-6 7-5 victory.

“I didn't have many chances in the third set – I was a bit down mentally,” Pliskova admitted afterwards. “Then suddenly I got a chance – that's how it is in tennis. You need luck, of course, because this is not happening often – maybe once in a lifetime – but I went for it. I just went for my shots and she got a little bit shaky in the end, so I took my chances and I won.”

Williams’ defeat comes just days after world number two Angelique Kerber was dumped out of the season-opening Grand Slam, and that means the outright market has a fresh look heading into the semi-finals.

Petra Kvitova is the now the favourite at 5/4 with bet365, but she faces a very tough task in the semi-finals in the form of 2018 US Open champion Naomi Osaka, and the bookies believe the winner of this match is likely to win the whole thing because the Japanese ace is the 12/5 second favourite.

Williams’ conqueror, Pliskova, is enjoying her best ever run at the Australian Open and is now 5/2 to claim a maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne, while semi-final opponent Danielle Collins is 11/1 as the bookies expect her dream run to finally come to an end in the semis.
