Murray has spent almost two years battling a hip injury, and during a pre-tournament press conference on Friday morning he stunned reporters by confirming his days as a professional tennis player are numbered.

The three-time Grand Slam champion revealed that his aim is to hang up his racket after one more Wimbledon appearance later this year, but such is the extent of the pain that he is in the 31-year-old Scot conceded he could be forced to retire following the upcoming Australian Open.

The chances of a fairytale farewell with him winning one last Grand Slam title appear to be almost non-existent, but prior to his announcement 56 Paddy Power punters had shown their faith in the five-time Australian Open runner-up by backing him to go all the way ‘Down Under’.

Their faith has now been rewarded with the Irish bookmaker announcing that it has already paid out on Murray to win the 2019 tournament.

“Andy Murray, known more for venting his emotions on the court than off it, announced his plans to retire from tennis in a tearful press conference before the Australian Open serves up this week,” said a spokesperson for the firm.

“And though the Scot may be understandably down in the dumps, we see no reason why those who backed him for the upcoming Grand Slam tournament should feel the same – so we’ve made the call to pay out on all singles and each-way online bets placed on him to win the competition outright.”
