Djokovic to dominate in 2019? Bookies react to Serb’s Australian Open success

Novak Djokovic continued his dominance of the Australian Open by blowing away Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s men’s singles final, but has he taken the first step towards completing a clean sweep of tennis’ major titles in 2019?

Nadal had gone into the final on the back of a dominant run that had seen him win all of his Australian Open matches in straight sets, but he also went into the match with a pretty disappointing record at the season-opening Grand Slam having lost each of his last three appearances in the final.

Djokovic, on the other hand, had won this tournament in each of the past two seasons and was looking to claim a record-setting seventh Australian Open title by beating his long-time rival on Sunday – he did just that and he did it in stunning fashion.

The 31-year-old Serb was utterly dominant on his serve as Nadal crumbled, committing 28 unforced errors, and it took just two hours and four minutes for the world number one to complete a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory that saw him pull away from Roy Emerson and Roger Federer and become the most successful male singles player in the history of this Grand Slam.

It also means he holds three of the four Grand Slam titles at present, having won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018, and if he is victorious at the French Open in a few months’ time he will have the accolade of holding all four men’s Grand Slam singles crowns at the same time.

Only one man has ever managed to accomplish that feat – and it was him! Djokovic held all four of tennis’ biggest titles when he followed up his 2015 successes at Wimbledon and the US Open with victories at the Australian Open and French Open in 2016.

Could he do it again? And could he actually become the first male player to win all four Grand Slam singles titles in a calendar year during the modern era?

Bookmaker Paddy Power is not ruling it out, but at 12/1 it believes it will take some effort from the Serb to achieve this feat.

The Irish bookie may not be confident about a full house, but it does expect Djokovic to add at least one more Grand Slam title to his CV before the end of the year, going 3/10 that the 15-time major winner wins two or more Grand Slam titles in 2019.

You can get 2/1 that he wins three or more this year, with defences of his Wimbledon and US Open titles still to come.
