Kvitova odds-on to Naomi Osaka back-to-back Grand Slams in Australian Open Final

Leigh Copson 24 Jan 2019

Naomi Osaka will be seeking back-to-back Grand Slam titles when she faces Petra Kvitova in the Australian Open women’s singles final on Saturday, but the bookmakers believe she will be in for disappointment.

Osaka made her major breakthrough last September when she upset 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the final of the US Open, and she has followed that up with her best ever showing at the Australian Open to reach the final of this tournament for the first time.

The 21-year-old was tasked with a tough semi-final challenge in the form of Karolina Pliskova, who won a thrilling quarter-final clash with Serena Williams earlier this week, and she was made to work for her victory as the seventh-seeded Czech took her to three sets.

Osaka put in a strong display though as she hit 15 aces and 56 winners in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory, but the bookmakers are not convinced that the young star will be able to follow that up with one more win Down Under on Saturday.

Providing the opposition in the women’s singles final is two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova, who finally ended her Grand Slam Final drought by making it to Saturday’s showdown with Osaka.

The 28-year-old Czech had failed to reach the last match of a major tennis tournament since being crowned Wimbledon champion for the second time in 2014, but she ended that drought in emphatic fashion on Thursday as she swept aside Danielle Collins in straight sets.

Unseeded American Collins had enjoyed a dream run to semi-finals that included a sensational 6-0 6-2 win over second seed Angelique Kerber, and she was not in the mood to go quietly as she took Kvitova all the way to a tiebreak in the first set.

Kvitova took it though, and as Collins wilted she moved up through the gears to wrap up a 7-6 (7-2), 600 victory, securing her first ever appearance in the final of the Australian Open.
So who will come out on top in this battle of first-time Aussie Open finalists?

The bookmakers have spoken and they are going against the seedings for this one, with bet365 making Kvitova an 8/11 favourite while offering Osaka as an 11/10 underdog.

Kvitova is yet to be taken beyond the second set and is 7/4 to win this match-up in straight sets, while a 2-1 victory for the Czech is priced up at 3/1.

Osaka, meanwhile, has had no less than three three-set tussles on her way to the Australian Open and she is 4/1 to win another three-set affair here, with a straight sets victory for her priced up at 12/5.
