Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem bring the 2019 French Open to a close when they meet in the men’s singles final on Sunday - and we’ve made our prediction for the match.

Nadal to beat Thiem in four sets at 12/5 @ Unibet

It’s looking increasingly likely that Nadal will be walking away with an unprecedented 12th Roland Garros title on Sunday - however, Thiem is certainly in with a chance of troubling the Spaniard as he chases what would be his first Grand Slam crown.

Everything’s fallen into Nadal’s favour over the last fortnight in Paris - he was blessed with a ridiculously soft draw over the first week and won’t have to face Novak Djokovic - one of just two men to have beaten him at Roland Garros. That’s a massive advantage for a man that doesn’t need any help winning French Open titles. Furthermore, Nadal has played to the normal men’s schedule at Roland Garros and has enjoyed a day off between his routine semi-final win over Roger Federer and the final, while Thiem has played for four hours across two days due to rain in order to beat Djokovic 7-5 in the fifth.

To put it simply, Nadal is as fresh as possible heading into the final, and when the 11-time champion reaches the final in that sort of condition, well, he wins 11 French Open titles. He blew Thiem off the court 12 months ago and will be confident of doing so again.

In saying that, I do think Thiem will present a formidable challenge and there could be a juncture in the match where he can really give himself a genuine chance of winning. Thiem coming out on fire with the adrenaline pumping and winning the first set is something I can easily envision, but sustaining the required intensity and quality over five sets against Nadal on clay is another matter. I feel it’s only a matter of time before Nadal reels him in - if he even is required to fight back at any point - and once Nadal gets a stranglehold on the match, it’s almost impossible to wrestle back momentum.

I’m quite confident in Thiem’s ability and level right now for the Austrian to play good enough to take a set, but with Nadal in this frame of mind on his favourite court in the world, it will take a near once-in-a-lifetime performance to beat him.
