Rafael Nadal targets a staggering 12th Monte-Carlo Masters title this week - read on below for our outright betting tips and predictions.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, it’s not really a matter of who will win, but who will come closest to challenging the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.

However, you can still get some solid odds of 5/4 for Nadal to win a 12th Monte-Carlo title @ BetVictor.

Nadal is an intimidating 68-4 lifetime in Monte-Carlo, with Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka the only other players to have taken home a title in the Principality since 2004. The Spaniard comes into the clay season with some slight question marks however - Nadal was forced to withdraw from the Indian Wells semi-finals with a knee injury and subsequently pulled out of Miami.

Nevertheless, I expect Nadal to be fit and firing, with his withdrawal from Miami more of a precaution and to ensure he would be in prime condition for the European clay season.

Djokovic once again looms as Nadal’s biggest challenger on clay, but the World No. 1 hasn’t been in great form since winning the Australian Open title, losing early at both Indian Wells and Miami to Philipp Kohlschreiber and Roberto Bautista Agut respectively. Djokovic won the Monte-Carlo title in 2013 when he beat Nadal in straight sets in the final - could be possibly do it again? The Serbian is 10/3 @ Betfair.

Meanwhile, Dominic Thiem is the only player to have beaten Nadal on clay in each of the last two seasons and arrives in Monte-Carlo full of confidence having won his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells last month.

The Austrian has improved each season on clay, reaching his first Grand Slam final at the French Open last year and also finishing runner-up at the Madrid Masters. Thiem appears ready to win a first big clay-court title, and you can get odds of 7/1 @ bet365.

Nadal, Djokovic and Thiem are the big three favourites, followed by the likes of Alexander Zverev (16 @ Unibet), Stefanos Tsitsipas (28 @ Ladbrokes), Kei Nishikori (33 @ Unibet) and former champion Stan Wawrinka (50 @ BetVictor).

Zverev is in woeful form and has lost three of his last four matches, including to Jaume Munar in the second round of Marrakech last week, while Australian Open semi-finalist Tsitsipas is playing in Monte-Carlo for just the second time after qualifying for the main draw and beating Denis Shapovalov last year to reach the second round.

Nishikori finished runner-up to Nadal last year but hasn’t been in great form recently, losing before the fourth round at both Indian Wells and Miami to Hubert Hurkacz and Dusan Lajovic respectively.

Wawrinka knows what it takes to win the title in Monte-Carlo, but the Swiss has found it tough to consistently produce his best tennis since his double knee surgery and would need the week of his life to prevail again, while rising teenage sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime is a 100/1 outsider with Unibet.

But, at the end of the day, you can’t possibly bet against Nadal in Monte-Carlo or in any tournament on clay for that matter. He’s dominated this tournament for over a decade, and if his knee is okay, he’ll most likely do it again. If Djokovic returns to his best form, we’ve seen he’s more than capable of hurting Nadal on clay, but the World No. 1 doesn’t bring encouraging results into this tournament. Monte-Carlo is once again Nadal’s to lose.
