Cilic has never really played well at Indian Wells- with his best result being a quarter final run in 2016, but the Croatian remains one of the most realistic challengers to Roger Federer- the overwhelming favourite for the BNP Paribas Open title.

The bottom half of the Indian Wells draw has already consumed five-time champion, Novak Djokovic and fourth seed, Alexander Zverev, but Cilic’s path to a potential final with Federer remains a tricky one, with Tuesday’s match against Kohlschreiber possibly followed by a fourth-round meeting with the unpredictable Monfils, while Acapulco champion, the in-form Juan Martin del Potro and Jack Sock are all projected future opponents for the second seed.

Last year’s quarter final run was sandwiched between opening round exits in 2015 and 2017, but the second seed avoided three opening round defeats in four years when he came through Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics in his 2018 opener. After failing to convert two set points at 4-5, Cilic fended off two break points in the next game, before eventually forcing the break to take the opener 7-5 after an hour. The second set was more straightforward, with Cilic earning the solitary break in the fourth game of the set; and going on to close out a 7-5 6-3 victory on his first match point.

The Croatian has had a mixed start to the season; opening the year with a semi-final in Pune, where he lost to Gilles Simon, before progressing to the final of the Australian Open, where he pushed eventual champion, Roger Federer. He crashed to a second-round loss to Gael Monfils in Rio, after which he pulled out of his next scheduled meet in Acapulco.

Looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since the Australian Open, Cilic takes on German veteran, Kohlschreiber at Indian Wells on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Kohlschreiber is yet to win consecutive matches at all this year.

He began the season with a 0-3 run, losing tournament openers in Sydney, the Australian Open and Sofia, but he eventually registered his first win of the year in Rotterdam, where he took out Karen Khachanov in three sets. He had his chances against Roger Federer in the second round; but fell 7-6 7-5 after blowing a 6-4 lead in the opening set tie break.

Kohlschreiber also reached the second round in Dubai; and has now progressed to the third round at Indian Wells after scoring a 1-6 6-4 6-4 victory over American, Tim Smyczek in his opening match. (He had a bye into the second round). He has been a consistent top-50 player for the best part of the last decade; and boasts a career-high ranking of 16th. The German has picked up an ATP title in each of the last four seasons, claiming the Kitzbuhel crown last year.

He also reached the final in Marrakech, losing to Borna Coric after failing to convert a multitude of match points, made semi-finals in Hamburg and Vienna, and reached the fourth round of the US Open- the first time he would be that far in a major since 2014- all of which led him to a year-end ranking of 29th.

Kohlschreiber and Cilic have seen a lot of each other over the years, with the German boasting a 6-4 record over his Croatian opponent in their career meetings. However, they have only met twice since 2012, with Kohlschreiber winning in Rotterdam in 2016, and Cilic easing to a straight-set victory at Wimbledon last year.

The German has clearly got the ability to mix it up with the top players in the world- he serves well, has a deceptively heavy forehand, and strikes an aesthetic and effective single-handed backhand. Indian Wells has already claimed a few top-ten casualties- Cilic will have to find something close to his Australian Open form to avoid following Dimitrov, Thiem and Zverev through the exit door.
