Khachanov vs Pella ATP Barcelona predictions and betting tips

Karen Khachanov attempts to snap a three-match losing streak when he takes on the in-form Guido Pella in the second round of the Barcelona Open on Wednesday.

Date: Wednesday April 24
Time: 2.00pm local time (1.00pm BST)
Court: CPista Manuel Orantes

It's been a very poor season for Khachanov, who is only 5-8 for the year, and has failed to cross the opening round in six of his eight tournaments this season. Not many would have predicted those numbers given Khachanov's brilliant 2018, which yielded three titles, including a maiden Masters 1000 crown in Paris at the end of the year, where he beat four top-ten players, including Novak Djokovic in the final to claim his biggest career title. That lifted him to a year-end ranking of 11th, and it seemed a formality that he would break into the top-ten in early 2019.

It has not quite happened that way, as the Russian has struggled for most of the season, and heads into Barcelona on the back of consecutive opening round defeats in Miami and Monte Carlo, losing to the unheralded duo of Jordan Thompson and Lorenzo Sonego respectively. He faces a much tougher test in his Barcelona opener, as he takes on Pella, who has been in such good form on clay this year. Despite his struggles, it is very possible Khachanov regains his form, a la Fabio Fognini last week, and blast his way past Pella, which is why it may not be the worst idea to have a punt at the Russian winning at 83/100 @ Ladbrokes.

Pella is a lame 2-5 on hard courts this season, but he has been on fire on the clay, amassing a superb 15-4 record on the surface. He won his maiden ATP Tour title in Sao Paolo, made the final in Cordoba and the semis in Buenos Aires, and he has transferred that South American form into Europe, opening his European clay-court season with a fine quarter final in Monte Carlo, featuring wins over Laslo Djere, Marin Cilic, and Marco Cecchinato before falling to Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals. Like the 7-6 6-3 scoreline suggests, he had his chances but could not quite polish them off.

Pella had an untidy start to his Barcelona campaign, trailing 3-6 0-2 against Joao Sousa, but he soon found his groove, fighting back to complete a 3-6 7-6 6-2 victory over the Portuguese.

Can he take out Khachanov on Wednesday? Back the Argentine to win at 11/10 @ William Hill.

Khachanov vs Pella Betting Tips

Pella and Khachanov head into this contest in contrasting forms- the former is arguably in the form of his life, while Khachanov has been all over the place for most parts of the season. The Russian will turn the corner at some point, you feel, but I don't think Wednesday is that point. A confident Pella should add to his collection of clay court wins.
