Robin Haase vs Mikhail Kukushkin ATP Rotterdam 2019 first round match preview, predictions and tips - an home hope Haase avoid a seventh opening round elimination in Rotterdam?

Date: Monday February 11
Start time: 2.00pm local time (1.00pm GMT)
Court: Centre Court

Haase vs Kukushkin predictions

World No. 54 Robin Haase squares off against World No. 55 Mikhail Kukushkin in an opening round Rotterdam contest that promises to be every bit as close as their respective rankings suggest.

Haase is a two-time quarter-finalist in Rotterdam (including last year) and owns a win over Andy Murray at his home event, but he’s also lost in the first round on six previous occasions, so just like his flashy game, you don’t really know what to expect from the Dutchman at this tournament.

The 31-year-old, who has won two ATP titles on clay throughout his career, comes into this event on the back of a second round showing at the Sofia Open, where he beat wildcard Dimitar Kuzmanov in the opening round before falling to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in three sets.

Haase’s earlier results in 2019 included two opening round defeats in Doha and Auckland, along with a second round elimination at the hands of Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open. You can back Haase at odds of 4/5 @ Ladbrokes.

Meanwhile, Kukushkin is playing in the main draw of Rotterdam for the first time in his career, with his only other previous visit to the tournament resulting in a first round qualifying loss in 2013.

Kukushkin hasn’t played much to start 2019, beginning his season with a first round loss at the Australian Open to eventual semi-finalist Lucas Pouille, while he also lost in the second round of the Sofia Open last week to Gael Monfils in straight sets.

Like Haase, Kukushkin is a flashy ball-striker who’s best and worst tennis can come and go at any moment. He does own a title indoors however, winning his only ATP trophy all the way back in 2010 in St. Petersburg. Kukushkin is at 6/5 @ bet365 to win on Monday.

Haase vs Kukushkin match stats

  • The Dutchman has lost in the first round six times
  • Kukushkin is making his Rotterdam debut in the main draw
  • Kukushkin won their only previous clash 5-7 7-6(2) 6-4 in Winston-Salem in 2014

Haase vs Kukushkin betting tips

Haase and Kukushkin are very similar players and neither one of them comes into this showdown in the best of form, losing in the second round of Sofia last week and without winning back-to-back matches this season. Both players are very inconsistent from week to week, but I fancy Haase to be the steadier of the pair on Monday. The Dutchman hasn’t always thrived in Rotterdam, but his defeats have come against players who are great defenders and who make him play that extra ball. Kukushkin isn’t that type of player, and when push comes to shove, I think Haase has that little more to draw upon under these conditions.
