Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka meet in a blockbuster all-Swiss battle at Indian Wells on Tuesday, as they dispute a fourth round ticket at the BNP Paribas Open.

Date: Tuesday March 12
Start time: 6:00pm (1.00am GMT, on Wednesday morning)
Court: Stadium 1

It's a repeat of the 2017 final, which Federer won in straight sets, and their 25th meeting overall, with Federer enjoying a dominant 21-3 record against his compatriot. While Federer is coming off a title run in Dubai- his 100th career title, Wawrinka is still seeking his first title since May 2017. Knee surgeries in the second half of 2017 have played a major role in his current title drought, but the three-time major champion has been operating close to his best form over the last six months, and pushed Federer to three sets in their most recent encounter in Cincinnati last season. Can the Swiss No. 2 dent Federer's quest for a record-breaking sixth Indian Wells crown?

Federer is looking to regain the Indian Wells title after losing out to Juan Martin del Potro in last year's final despite holding three match points against the Argentine. He fell short at Indian Wells, but the great Swiss still claimed four titles last year- at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Stuttgart and Basel to move up to 99 titles. His quest to reach the 100 mark at the Australian Open was sensationally ended by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round, but Federer eventually got over the line in Dubai, earning some sort of revenge over Tsitsipas in the final to become the second man in the Open Era to win 100 tour-level titles.

The Swiss opened his Indian Wells campaign with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Peter Gojowczyk, who competed well in the second set, but was never likely to really stretch Federer. Can the great man win the all-Swiss battle against Wawrinka on Tuesday? Federer is at 5/16 @ Betfair to beat Wawrinka.

Wawrinka, who at 40th in the world, wasn't entitled to a first round bye, has had to come through two difficult matches just to reach the third round, beating Daniel Evans 6-7 6-3 6-3 in the first round, before outlasting Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-7 7-5 in a three-and-a-half-hour second round epic to book a date with Federer. Wawrinka's season has included a fine runner-up finish in Rotterdam (lost to Gael Monfils), and a couple of quarter finals in Doha and Acapulco, working his way to a presentable 11-5 record for the season.

Federer vs Wawrinka Match Stats

  • Federer leads 21-3 on head-to-head, and has won the last 5 meetings
  • Federer has not lost to Wawrinka since 2015
  • Wawrinka is attempting to reach the fourth round at Indian Wells for the fifth time in his last six appearances

Federer vs Wawrinka Betting Tips

Federer has absolutely dominated Wawrinka over the years, winning 21 of their 24 matches, including the last five. The 20-time major champion has not lost to his compatriot since 2015. There is no doubt that Wawrinka has got the power and stroke-making ability to really hurt Federer, and he will have his moments on Tuesday, plenty of them, actually, but beyond the serve and volleys, slice and single-handed backhands, Federer does seem to have this psychological hold on Wawrinka. To be fair, this has waned in recent years, with Wawrinka making his way to the elite group of the sport, but it definitely still exists. If Wawrinka finds his best level, this will be close, but I think Federer, who has got a more reliable forehand and more options on the backhand wing, will edge this once again.
