After his career-best 2017, Goffin has not quite hit the ground running in the new year, suffering a surprise second-round defeat to Frenchman, Julien Benneteau at the Australian Open before falling to Richard Gasquet at the semi-finals of last week’s Open Sud de France in Montpellier. While the Montpellier result was not the worst in the world, it was short of last year’s effort, when he finished runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Seeded No. 1 at the tournament, the Belgian looked the part in victories over Gilles Simon and Karen Khachanov, and he seemed to have all the momentum when he took the second set to love against Gasquet in the semis, but the Frenchman wrestled back control to emerge with a three-set win.

Goffin’s superb 2017 was hinged on a strong start, featuring a quarter final run at the Australian Open, and consecutive finals in Montpellier and Rotterdam, resulting in his rise into into the top ten for the first time in his career.  A slight dip in form and injuries hampered his progress through the middle period of the year, but he produced a strong finish, wrapping up a fine campaign with a runner-up finish at the Nitto ATP Finals, and taking with it a year-end No. 7 ranking.

Despite his Australian Open no-show and last week’s semi-final exit in Montpellier, Goffin has maintained that ranking through the opening weeks of the season, but he is bound to come under more pressure at this week’s ATP 500 meet in Rotterdam, where he will once again be defending runner-up points from last year.

He faces a tricky start against the enigmatic Frenchman, Benoit Paire.

A career-high ranking of 18 reflects just how good Paire can be on his day, but he has not quite been able to match those talents with the proper mental application, and has thus settled into being a mid-table floater.

Paire has actually made a solid start to 2018- if you manage to ignore an opening round defeat to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at the Australian Open.

The 28-year-old started his season with consecutive semi-finals in Pune and Sydney, scoring wins over Marton Fucsovics and big-serving Luxembourger, Gilles Muller (who was defending champion in Sydney), but then, there was that tame exit in Melbourne, where he fell in four sets to Garcia-Lopez. Paire hit back with a quarter final in Montpellier, scoring impressive wins over Mischa Zverev and John Millman, before crashing to eventual champion Lucas Pouille- no shame in that. So, the Frenchman has been winning a lot of matches this season, and represents a genuine threat to Goffin’s ambitions in Rotterdam.

Paire last won a match in Rotterdam in 2011, an opening round victory over Gilles Simon, but he has failed to cross the first hurdle in his three visits after that in 2013, 2016 and 2017, where he crashed to Marin Cilic. Can he end that three-match losing streak at the tournament when he takes on Goffin on Tuesday?

Interestingly, Paire has a winning 3-2 record over Goffin, with the Frenchman taking their most recent meeting in a third set tie break in Metz last year- their only encounter on an indoor hard court. Paire has now won three in four against the higher-ranked Belgian. Again, that goes to show just how good he can be when he is dialed in.

While Paire’s forehand remains dodgy, he has got a useful serve on him, and that backhand is one of the best in the business. If those two shots fire on Tuesday, he has got a very good chance of upsetting Goffin, who is not quite at the level he reached at the start and end of last season. However, over the years, Paire has consistently proven to be a difficult man to back, with that tendency to fall away when things aren’t going his way. That is why the tougher Goffin remains the much safer option.
