Bertens vs Friedsam WTA Stuttgart predictions and betting tips

  • Kiki Bertens starts her quest for the Stuttgart title against German qualifier, Anna-Lena Friedsam on Tuesday
  • Bertens won their only previous meeting in 2014

Kiki Bertens begins her campaign at the German Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Tuesday when she takes on German qualifier, Anna-Lena Friedsam in the first round.

For all the good things she has done on clay especially in the last couple of seasons, Bertens has never won a match in Stuttgart, losing to Karolina Pliskova last season, and Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2016 in her previous two appearances at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Is this the season when she finally gets off the mark at the tournament?

Over the last year and a half, Bertens has become more of an all-court player, rather than a clay-court expert, transferring her successes on the dirt to grass and hard courts. She claimed two titles on hard courts last season (Cincinnati and Seoul), and made the quarter finals at Wimbledon. She had a decent run in the opening quarter of 2019, claiming another title in St. Petersburg, making a semi-final in Sydney, quarter final in Doha and back-to-back fourth-round showings at Indian Wells and Miami. However, her clay-court swing didn't exactly get off to the best of starts, as she fell to Maria Sakkari in the last of 16 to surrender the title she won last year. Will the red clay of Stuttgart bring better fortunes?

She goes in as a big favourite against home player, Anna-Lena Friedsam, which explains why she is at 1/5 @ bet365.

Anna-Lena Friedsam has had a terrible ordeal with a shoulder injury over the last couple of seasons, missing extended periods due to the problem. She was out for 10 months last season, and is playing just her third tour-level tournament in 2019. Friedsam was beaten in the opening rounds in Miami and Charleston, and will attempt to score her first WTA win since Hobart last January when she plays Bertens.

The world No. 483 heads into Tuesday's Stuttgart opener with some momentum, as she came through three rounds of qualifying, but she faces a big step up in class on Friday, as she takes on top-ten star, Bertens. Friedsam is a big underdog here, but the WTA is not exactly immune from big upsets, and if you want to take the chance on the German, she is at 4/1 @ William Hill.

Bertens vs Friedsam Match Stats

  • Bertens leads 1-0 on head-to-head
  • Bertens is seeking her first ever win in Stuttgart
  • Friedsam has not won a WTA main draw match since Hobart in January last year

Bertens vs Friedsam Betting Tips

An upset is never too far from the WTA Tour, but I cannot see one happening here. Friedsam has played very little tennis in the last couple of seasons, while Bertens has been doing the exact opposite of matches- winning a multitude of them. She also owns a winning head-to-head against Friedsam, taking their only previous meeting in Luxembourg way back in 2014. Bertens looks set to maintain that perfect record.
