Bencic vs Alexandrova predictions

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic comes into this year’s BNP Paribas Open as once again one of the most talked about younger players after her spectacular run at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The 22-year-old had struggled with a dreadful series of injuries which saw her former top-10 ranking drop outside the top 200 in 2017, but she followed a run to the Hobart semifinals earlier in 2019 with a sequence of four victories over top-10 players in the space of one week to capture the Premier-5 title in Dubai and remind everyone just how good she can be.

Bencic made the round of 16 at Indian Wells back in 2015, the same year she was a quarterfinalist at the US Open, and is looking for her first back-to-back wins since after beating Alison van Uytvanck in the second round.

Ekaterina Alexandrova, two years older at 24, is much less feted – the Russian comes into the BNP Paribas Open at a career-high ranking of world no. 53 after finishing runner-up at Linz in 2018, as well as winning the WTA 125k in Limoges and making the final of an ITF $800k. Alexandrova was a semifinalist in Budapest earlier this year and has put together two good wins at Indian Wells so far, beating Rebecca Peterson and Caroline Wozniacki in three sets.

Bencic vs Alexandrova match stats

Bencic vs Alexandrova betting tips

Bencic and Alexandrova have never played before, but I think Alexandrova has one clear advantage: She had to beat Caroline Wozniacki in the previous round (and did, 7-5 in the third), which is excellent preparation for playing someone like Bencic.

The Swiss starlet is not a carbon copy of Wozniacki, but some of the same tactics that worked well against the Dane will work well for the Russian, who dictated play superbly against the former world no. 1 with her backhand and looked very comfortable in the slow, windy, gritty conditions of Indian Wells, whereas Bencic will struggle to hit through them. Bencic, who is prone to losing control of her emotions, is still a streaky player and I think the sharper Alexandrova has a good chance at scoring a big upset.
