Ashleigh Barty and Marketa Vondrousova clash in the 2019 French Open final on Saturday and we’ve picked out our three best bets for the match.

Barty to win (head-to-head) at 8/13 @ Betfair

It’s a final nobody expected, but at the end of the day, Barty and Vondrousova have been two of the form players on tour all season and will provide an entertaining spectacle on Saturday as both players aim for a maiden Grand Slam title.

Barty has been building to this moment since returning from professional cricket in 2016, cracking the top 20 the following season, the top 15 in 2018 and breaking into the top 10 for the first time earlier in 2019 after winning the Miami Open. Now projected to rise to No. 3 by making the French Open final (and No. 2 if she wins), Barty looks to cap a dream run with a maiden major trophy.

The Australian was forced to dig deep to survive her semi-final against Amanda Anisimova in a wild roller-coaster encounter, but Barty was clearly the better and more consistent player in the last two sets, and overcoming that adversity (namely losing the first set from 5-0, 40-15) will put her in good stead for the final.

Vondrousova has also come back from losing margins despite not dropping a set on her way to her first Grand slam final, recovering from 3-5 down in her last three sets, including the second set against Petra Martic in the quarters and both sets against Johanna Konta in the semis. The Czech has been in superb form since the Australian Open, reaching at least the quarter-finals of every tournament she’s contested, but I do wonder if not playing on Court Philippe-Chatrier will affect her nerves at the start of the match…

Barty to win in three sets at 3/1 @ William Hill

I can actually see a similar sort of pattern playing out to Barty’s win over Anisimova. Nerves are always there for first-time slam finalists, but as I mentioned, Vondrousova hasn’t played on centre court yet, and moreover, she’s still a teenager and hasn’t come close to playing on this sort of stage before. Barty won a big Premier Mandatory event in Miami earlier in the year and has played on Chatrier over the last week, and she was on fire to start her match against Anisimova (even though she made a right meal of that opening set in the end).

I think Barty can start in similar fashion and race out to an opening set lead, but Vondrousova is playing too good not to make a match of it in the second. The 19-year-old should have a chance to make some headway in the second if Barty gets tense close to the finish line, but I still believe the Australian will come up trumps in the end - she demonstrated her ability to reset against Anisimova and she will draw on that experience if put in the same position in the final.

Total Games - Over 22.5 at 1 @ Coral

If the final goes three sets, then we will almost certainly see more than 22 total games. As previously stated, I think this match has three sets written all over it. Barty has won both of their previous matches in straight sets, but needless to say, this is a totally different contest and will also be their first encounter on clay, which - in my opinion - swings the pendulum back towards Vondrousova’s favour. There will be a lot of variety on display - both players love to slice, while Vondrousova’s drop shot is arguably the best on tour. However, Barty has done the hard yards over the last few years and I think this is her time to shine.
