Daily Australian Open predictions and betting tips here - the best bets for Sunday January 27.

We are down to the final day of the 2019 Australian Open and what a mouth-watering showdown we have in prospect as the two top players in the world, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, clash for a record 53rd time. We have picked our best bets ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster final!

Novak Djokovic to win

Honestly, there’s barely anything separating Djokovic and Nadal as the pair prepare for a historic Australian Open final showdown on Sunday.

Both players have been ruthless over the last fortnight, emphatically extinguishing all of the premature changing of the guard talk, especially in their respective semi-finals, where Djokovic dropped just five games against Lucas Pouille and Nadal blitzed young upstart Stefanos Tsitsipas, losing just six games himself.

Something simply has to give in Sunday’s showpiece. Djokovic is a perfect 6-0 in Australian Open finals as he strives to become the first man to secure seven titles in Melbourne, while Nadal has never lost a major final when advancing to the title match without relinquishing a set. The Spaniard is looking to follow in Rod Laver and Roy Emerson’s footsteps as the only men to have collected every slam at least twice.

We all remember their epic six-hour slugfest in the 2012 final and I think there’s every chance we see another marathon contest seven years later. For me, Djokovic is the slight favourite. He has a narrow 27-25 lead in their head-to-head, but he’s fairly dominant in their meetings on hardcourt, winning 18 of their 25 clashes on the surface, while Nadal hasn’t beaten Djokovic on a hardcourt in six years.

From a pure match-up perspective, Nadal’s strength (topspin forehand) naturally cannons straight into Djokovic’s primary weapon (backhand), and more often than not, it’s been the Serbian who has won that particular war of attrition.

It promises to be another gruelling battle, but I think Djokovic’s superior record on hardcourts makes him favourite to walk away with a 15th major title on Sunday.

Djokovic to beat Nadal in five sets

As mentioned, I’m of the belief we could see another energy-sapping marathon between these two. Both men were operating close to the peak of their powers in their semi-finals and will have another level to hit in the final.

Historically, when both are playing their best tennis, it’s been ridiculously close - see their five-set Wimbledon final from last year, which Djokovic won 10-8 in the fifth.

There’s no way either of these players will fail to win at least one set if they continue to produce the sort of tennis that has propelled them into the final.

Djokovic and Nadal have played three five-setters so far in their careers, with the Serbian winning two - including that 2012 epic after six hours of punishing tennis. Again, it’s so tough to call when both guys are playing like this, but Djokovic has the definite edge on his surface any way you try and spin it - and I expect that to shine through come Sunday night.

Djokovic vs Nadal - Total games over 45.5

If we do indeed get another five-setter between the pair, then we are likely going to see a lot of games (I highly doubt we’ll be seeing any 6-1 or 6-2 blowout sets).

Basically any sort of fairly close fifth-set scoreline between Djokovic and Nadal should make it over at least 45.5 games, and at these odds, it’s surely worth a punt!
