Djokovic to dominate in Australia? Bookies price up Australian Open contenders

Djokovic to dominate in Australia? Get the latest Men's Australian Open betting tips.

The very first major tennis competition of 2019 is already upon us, with Australia boasting the start of the tennis season this January. The stars of the men’s game look to be out in force for this one, with the big four looking to continue the dominance that has graced the tennis scene for years.

With the top four dominating for so long, it feels as though no other player really has a chance of winning a Grand Slam. Indeed, since the French Open in 2005, which Rafael Nadal won, only Juan Martin del Potro, Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka have won a Grand Slam title, with 53 of the 56 titles going to one of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray or Nadal. This incredible dominance could soon be coming to an end though, with injuries to Murray and Nadal hampering the pair, while Federer is now 37-years-old and, despite being possibly the greatest tennis player of all time, even he cannot stop the inexorability of time.

With this in mind, it seems as though the rising stars may at last get a chance to get to the top of the game, although Djokovic will have something to say about that, with the Serb snatching up both the Wimbledon and US Open titles last year.

It seems as though the bookies agree with the idea of the big four continuing their dominance though. Djokovic is currently the big favourite at 11/10 with BetVictor, ahead of the likes of Federer and Nadal (both 11/2), before there is a massive jump to Alexander Zverev (9/1) and Marin Cilic (20/1), who are two that fall into the category of rising stars, while Kei Nishikori is 28/1, and he is one of the old guard that was kept away from a Grand Slam by the big four. Other notable names in the running are injury-prone Murray (20/1), sometimes brilliant but often infuriating Nick Kyrgios (20/1), and Stan Wawrinka (33/1).

Perhaps this will be the year that Djokovic and Federer et al fail to win the opening Slam of the year but Federer, who is looking to defend his crown and land a third-straight Australian Open crown, provides good odds to win again, and he is the man we are backing when looking for a bit more value than Djokovic, who is almost Evens before the tournament has even started.

The opening tournament of the year often provides a good barometer for how the rest of the year will go, with victory in the Australian giving a great springboard for 2019. Djokovic is of course the favourite after returning to form in the second half of 2018, and he will be very difficult to beat as he looks back to his elastic-best once again, although Federer will also be very difficult to oust, with the Swiss showing no signs of his age yet.
