Scottish star Maguire's last major silverware came at the 2013 Welsh Open, but current form suggests he remains a key frontrunner to land the season's first singles title this weekend.

World number 15 Maguire headed Down Under knowing that strong run was required in order to ease the danger of dropping out of the world's top 16 and has responded to that pressure emphatically.

The Glaswegian has followed up his run to the Snooker World Cup final alongside John Higgins for Scotland in China a fortnight ago with a series of strong displays so far this week.

He kicked off with a 5-0 whitewash of Joel Walker, before edging out Ricky Walden 5-4 and ending the reign of Judd Trump with a commanding 5-1 victory in the Quarter-Finals.

Standing in the way of the former UK Champion and a place in the final is the quietly confident Martin Gould - who has enjoyed a fine run under the radar this week.

The Londoner has once again emphasised his calibre over short formats and now finds himself in only the third major ranking Semi-Final of his career.

Gould initially battled past Marco Fu in a last-frame decider, before defeating Michael Holt 5-3 and going on to thrash form horse Matthew Selt 5-1 on Friday.

Nicknamed 'The Pinner Potter,' Gould is aiming to land his first major title and kick-start his bid for a return to the world top 16 in the early part of the campaign.

The duo have met ten times in previous competition, with Gould having claimed victory on six of those occasions since 2003, including last year's Wuxi Classic Quarter-Final.

The match gets underway at 10am BST on Saturday and is to be contested over the best of 11 frames from the Bendigo Stadium.

Either four-time World Champion John Higgins or emerging Welsh star - Jamie Jones - will await the winner in Sunday's show-piece final.

Player's view:

Maguire: "I've had a good couple of weeks, getting to the World Cup final in China and now carrying on the form here. Hopefully it will be an all-Scottish final.

"But it will be very tough for me tomorrow because Martin has played better than anyone this week, he is scoring heavily."

Gould: "In the first few nights here I was only getting three or four hours sleep, but for the last couple of nights it has been better. The jet lag is always a killer."

Bettingpro.com verdict:

Maguire is renowned for his attacking approach and fluent break-building, but Gould has scored the heavier of the two this week, with two centuries to the Scot's zero.

Make no mistake, the world number 24 is expected to push Maguire hard in this finely-poised Semi-Final, but the superior consistency of the Scot should see him over the line.

Our top three tips (odds with William Hill):

  • Maguire to win 6-4 @ 24/5
  • Over 9.5 total frames @ 19/20
  • First mini-session - Draw @ 7/5
