The Six Red World Championship has been a regular fixture on the snooker calendar since 2012 and the tournament takes place at the Fashion Island Shopping Mall from September 7-12 with Stephen Maguire looking to retain his title.

Scotland’s Maguire won the 2014 Six Red World Championship for the first time in his career as he beat Englishman Ricky Walden 8-7.

The format for the Six Red World Championship is slightly different to normal snooker events with six reds being used instead of the normal 15. Other than that the rules are the same.

Since the birth of the Six Red World Championship there has been six tournaments from 2008 with the only year it did not take place was in 2011. Mark Davis is the only player to have won the title back-to-back, while other winners include Walden, Jimmy White and Mark Selby.

Eight groups consisting of six players each of both professional and amateur competitors will battle it out in a round-robin format (best-of-nine frames) before four players from each group go into the knockout phase of the competition.

Maguire will be in Thailand ready to defend his trophy, while the likes of Judd Trump, Mark Davis, Matthew Stevens, Graeme Dott and John Higgins will be looking to take it off his hands.

One player looking to cause a few upsets is Scottish taxi driver Craig MacGillivray when he lines up against World Champion Stuart Bingham, Mark Davis, Yan Bingtao, Soheil Vahed and Noppon Saengkham in Group E.

The 43-year-old from Lothian is hoping his taxi work away from snooker will not be a hindrance once the tournament gets underway.

He said:
“Stuart (Bingham) has done extremely well and I was delighted for him when he won the World Championship. While he has been playing tournaments and will be well prepared, the tournament has come at a bad time for me, with my practice restricted due to working as many hours as I could during the Edinburgh Festival.
“I know Stuart well from when I was in the pro circuit. He stayed with me about fifteen years ago when the Scottish Open was being played in Aberdeen and I made a 147 against him at the Shandon Club, so hopefully this reunion will bring out the best in me.
“I am really looking forward to it. The last time I was in Thailand was 25 years ago when I qualified for the latter stages of the Asian Open 25 years ago so it will be great to go back."
