Tournament favourite O'Sullivan has cantered through to the latter stages for the loss of just four frames, and having seen off Matthew Stevens in the last round, will be out to put paid to the hopes of another Welsh star.

O'Sullivan is bidding to equal Steve Davis' record haul of six UK titles and continues to chase down his first major silverware of the season after suffering defeat in two finals.

While the five-time World Champion has been typically outspoken off the table this week, he has also let his cue do the talking on it, compiling six centuries along the way.

Williams, meanwhile, is appearing at this stage of the competition for the first time since finishing runner-up in Telford six years ago, having come through back-to-back deciders against Ricky Walden and Liam Highfield in the last two rounds.

The two-time UK Champion, whose triumphs came back in 1999 and 2002, has proved he still has what it takes to cut it at the highest level and is sure to offer up 'The Rocket' a stern examination.

The world number 16 has reached the Semi-Finals of the Riga Masters and Quarter-Finals of the Northern Ireland Open in an otherwise below-par first half of the season, but victory here could be the catalyst to something special this weekend.

This will be the 40th competitive meeting between these two stalwarts, with O'Sullivan bidding for his 29th win to follow up a narrow 6-5 triumph in the opening round of the Masters back in January.

Their latest encounter gets underway from 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Barbican Centre in York.

Either 2008 runner-up Marco Fu or in-form Welsh underdog Jamie Jones will await the winner in the Semi-Finals on Saturday.
